It is not hard to be inspired to learn about ecology in a place like the Kootenays: the more you learn, the greater your motivation to know more! – Doris Hausleitner, Ecology instructor

I currently teach first year Terrestrial Ecology and Applied Biology and Systems Ecology in the Integrated Environmental Planning Program (IEP) and Ecosystems Management for the Recreation Fish and Wildlife program. I also teach the restoration field school for IEP.

I am owner/operator of a consulting company, Seepanee Ecological Consulting which has specialized in research on rare and endangered wildlife species in British Columbia for the past 14 years.

Past/current projects have included:

Riparian and wetland restoration
Long term wildlife monitoring; ungulates, birds, reptiles and amphibians
Invasive plant monitoring
Impact assessments for winter recreation
Landscape scale non-invasive genetic sampling of wolverine
Radio-telemetry of Western Screech-owls; demographics and habitat use
Inventory of British Columbia owls
Mark-recapture study for western toad migration
Common night-hawk inventory and nest search
Northern spotted-owl demography study
Greater sage-grouse population dynamics and habitat use study
Habitat analysis of black-necked cranes in Bhutan

Community Involvement:

Coach for Nelson Nordic Ski Club
Member of Kootenay Agricultural Society
Kootenay Conservation Program Board of Directors
Slocan Wetlands Assessment and Monitoring Project Steering Committee
Columbia Mountains Institute Board of Directors
Selkirk College Sustainability Committee

I live on a 9-acre farm outside of Nelson with my husband, two children, two dogs, pigs, chickens and bees. The Kootenays provide us with so much: community, recreation and sustainable living.
