During 1976 and 1977, information was gathered, sorted and compiled in the form of a guide booklet on alpine ski touring in the West Kootenay Region. The West Kootenays were recognized as having a great variety in mountainous terrain inherently providing many skiing possibilities. It was noted that the popularity of alpine ski touring was growing but outside mountaineering circles, there was little public information on the recreation activity, notably on location and access to areas in the Kootenays. Considering that many people do not have the time nor desire to go exploring entirely on their own for touring possibilities, a justified need for such a guide book was established.
By providing clear, concise information in a usable form, local tourers will be able to make the necessary decisions on where to go and how to get there
