Abstract
The purpose of this report is to describe the winter distribution of mountain goats on the rockbluffs, south west of Hugh Keenleyside Dam near Castlegar, BC. A secondary objective is to relate habitat selection to climate, terrain, vegetation, moisture, and thermal shelter. Data on goat occupancy were collected through observations with a spotting scope every three or four days. Several one-day trips were made into the area to determine the vegetation community, signs of vegetation utilization, and to collect photographs of the goat habitat. A weather survey, from Environment Canada, was used to clarify the winter distribution of the goats.
Based on the information discussed it is recommended that recreation be given a higher priority as a management goal. In addition, it is important that the BC Fish and Wilidlife Branch manage the herd. |
