Twenty-six of these chil- dren were girls and three were boys. ed They were all too young to buy a bottle of beer, drive a ear or vote. In some com- munities; they. would ‘have been too young to enter a pool room. Two of the..boys married women in-their 20s and the other one married a_teen- -ager. Most of the grooms for the young brides were aged 15-24, but one\was in his 30s. ‘The age of najority — the age at whichipeople can get married without parental consent — is 18 in most prov- inces. However most provinces allow people.to be married at age 16, with parental con- sent, or even at a younger age with the consent of the courts or if the bride is ‘pregnant, : In. Quebec, for example, girls as young as 12 can be married, a:Justice Depart- ment official said. Statistics Canada did not provide a provincial break- down on the location of the child marriages or the actual age of the children. An official at the federal. statistical agency said there had not been any boys under the age of 16. married in: Canada since..at least 1971. He was at a loss to explain why three suddenly appear- ed last year. 18 EXCEPTIONAL The number of girls under the age of 15 getting married has been decreasing each year, but-last year was an exception. There were 85 such brides in 1971 and only 18 in 1981. A total of 25,089 female and 6,820 male teenagers be- tween 15 and 19 were mar-— ‘ried last year. Among the fe- males, -3,558 were between the ages of 15 and 17 and among the males, 246 were in that age group. Phe. total number of mar- riages in the country declined slightly to 188,860 from 190,082 in 1981.
