Hairdressing Association “says that our students are the best ” NELSON - About 200 students and staff members of Selkirk Col- lege's Nelson campus gathered Monday at noon to talk with col- lege president Leo Perra about planned program cutbacks. Perra spent much of the lunch- time session standing before a microphone, answering questions from students, but at the end of the hour no solution had appeared for the problem of dwindling funds and resultant cuts to programs. Perra told the group that the cuts were made because last week’s Provincial budget left the school short about $325,000. And they were made to programs that suf- fered less than 100 per cent enroll- ment and, where possible, that operated in a couple of activities, so that one activity coyld be cut without killing the whole program. For example: the hair dressing pro- gfam operates as a one-year class, with two classes starting each year, one in the spring, one in the fall. The program operates at about 75 percent capacity, so the fall class will be cut.At the same time stu- dents expressed their opinions: ‘That Canada and British Columbia seém to be Saying they can’t afford” to, educate the people, that presi- dent Leo Perra's travel budget of about $30,000 a year scems exces- sive in light of the planned cuts, and that the cuts were ill consid- ered and too quickly made. The college announced last week that cuts would be made to several programs. In Castlegar, the program will be immediately cut, In Nelson, the major appliance repair program will be cut, the TRAC program will be cut, but may be replaced by a general mechanics program, hair dress- ing’s second class will be cut, and the second class in long term care aid (starting in January 1992) will be cut. All those cuts, if they go through, will cost about 10 jobs in tbe Nelson and Castlegar campus- es. Student representative Betty- Anne Nelson, a ig stu- Perra said in reply that because the 18-seat hair cutting program has been at 12 to 16 persons for the past few years, it had to be affected by the funding loss. “The enroll- ments have not been at a full capacity for some time,” he said. “We made decisions that would allow us to keep the program in place.” Among others gathered and who expressed opinions were: Corky Evans: Selkirk College's funding problems are “driven by Political ideology ... that wants to trash the hinterland and feed the city (Lower Mainland),” George Millar: “We are con- cemed when we hear of the poten- tial for losing students.” Klaus Offerman: “These cut- backs are just plain dumb.” Evans is an NDP candidate for the Nelson-Creston provincial rid- ing. Millar is a Nelson alderman, Offerman is an IWA union repre- sentative. Effective immediately, travel budgets have been reduced by ten per cent for instruction and 25 per cent for administration. In addi- tion, funds for extra sessions and other forms of relief staff have been pared. “It is regrettable to contemplate any reductions to our compreben- ly may be In making these decisions, the college took a number of factors into consideration. One of the main factors was enrollment in the indi- vidual programs. “These decisions were not easy to make,” said Perra. “The impact overall in terms of students should be minimal though.” The fact that programs were going to have to be cut came as no fall ; dent, said the hair cutting p sive ffering of post- y may survive with only one class, but cutting the fall class means there will no longer be a more experienced group of students around to provide information and help to newer students in the pro- gram. And hair cutting student Patricia Osborne told Perra the as a public Se antiaa: we are not permitted to generate a deficit bud- get,” said college president Leo Perra.
