Trail Times-Friday, July 1_1_, 1986-7 TIMES •ill ,.... Harry This week's retiree effort on the upper course was masterminded by Rich Watkinson and Percy Cutler and had 62 members on the course for a fine day's golf. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. Our foursome of Chris Christianson, Wilf Woodhouse, Harry Hanson and I got off the tee before 8 a.m. Not, perhaps, the best round any of us have played but the course, the weather and the company make everything look good. The winners were, low gross, Sam Anselmo and Russ Broughton with 42. Russ was closest to the pin on number nine after three shots to win a ball. Stan Fisher was closest to the pin on number three while Sam Maher and Clyde Olmstead won the hidden high on number seven. In a draw for the honey pot award, Carl Osing won a ball and maybe it's because he's so good-looking, but with his handicap you don't need much but a little luck! Next week Romeo DiBiasio and Herb Martin will be in charge and no doubt will have some surprises. Tee-off time will be, as usual whenever you get there. Things are usually beginning to move by7a.m. The Trail Little Leaguers are in their baseball battle to represent the district and as I write this they have only to win their final game to be crowned district champs. From there, it's on to the Little League World Series. All the best of luck to Andy and his kids! I hope to get down to see a game tonight because it could be my last chance before this part of it is over. Last Sunday the Rossland Legion hosted a fun golf tournament with a steak supper following. I don't know which I enjoyed the most. I played with Bert Pengelly, Eleanor Honey and Mickie Morrow as my partner. This two-ball, best ball is quite an innovation and the supper was super. I tried to talk our entertainment chairman into more of the same but I didn't get an affirmative answer. No doubt it takes a lot of organization work but we have lots of people to call on. At least let's have one more before the snow closes our grand old course down for 1986. Prizes for this event were many and varied. The team of Bill Vickers and Adrienne Leaman took top spot with a combined effort of 43. Rob Harasin won the long drive on number one. Joe Beauchamp was the closest to the pin on number five and Peter Brown and Irene Malchow chipped in from 12 and eight feet respectively. I tried to figure out that in centimetres for you but it's not easy, so you figure it out. The worst putter category went to me and my partner, while Laura Caswell was the hardest worker on the course. I don't know how they figure this one out, but maybe she replaced all her divots. Keith Woods got so unhappy he threw his putter. Sharon Schuck earned a crying towel and Frank Harris was awarded the best-dressed athlete on the course award. We had one American citizen· in our midst, Mary Bonetto, a member of the Starcevic family attended the event. Welcome, Mary! Sam Manson and Rob Harasin took over on the steaks, while Alfie Albo saw that everything was in readiness for them. Great steaks! Thanks Alfie, Sam and Robbie! The major soccer series is now history and we congratulate the champs from South America on their victory. Germany made quite a comeback but it was not quite enough. Canada's first-ever appearance proved that we belong in that company but a lot of work must be done before we can hope to emulate Argentina. Our pro circuit athletes are doing not too badly but the competition is pretty tough all over. The Expos, Jays and the Lions have got a lot to prove before their respect.ive seasons end. Meanwhile minor soccer is still drawing a lot of kids and all the types of ball are alive and well. So with that, I'll say, 'Til next time, then!
