Rafe Mair, min- ister of health. “Eradication of the dis- ease on a global scale allowed us to discontinue buying vac- cine,”’ said the minister. “Smallpox vaccine for some time has not been given at our immunization clinics and it no longer is recommended for international travel.” Mair explained that the ministry’s decision to stop buying the vaccine means pri- vate-practicing physicians, who until now have been im- munizing patients in their of- fices, no longer will be able to use free vaccine for such pur- poses. The minister said the de- cision was taken on the advice of experts who stated there is now no medical benefit to smallpox vaccination.
