: 2): cs Castlégar News October 28, 1987 THE ROYALS Press could destroy monarchy LONDON (Reuter) — Constant press scrutiny of the marriage of Prince Charles and Diane could destroy the Royal Family, an expert on the monarchy warned Tuesday. \\ “If this situation continues it could mean the end of ” said Harold Brooks-Baker, editor of The Prince and Princess of Wales, whose marriage as the romance of the century six years ago, n leading separate lives for the last six weeks. estrangement has led to daily headlines and speculation about a marriage crisis, especially in Britain's popular tabloids. Buckingham Palace has declined comment. “The country is close to a constitutional crisis,” Brooks-Baker said in an interview. However, he said the Royal Family is partly to blame for the press treating them like characters in a soap opera. “The new young royals are acting in a way that is not pleasing to people,” he said. The British press have also been paying critical attention to the Queen's two youngest sons, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, with accusations they don't take their royal duties seriously enough. “DON'T CARE’ “The present press barons do not seem to care at all about the fabric of monarchy,” said Brooks-Baker. “If this country loses this monarchy, this would be a very different country. It will lose influence and prestige.” The Queen returned to Britain on Saturday night after the Commonwealth summit in Vancouver and a visit to Western Canada and Quebec amid speculation that she might try to reconcile Charles and Diana or at least urge them to be more discreet. “It is said Her Majesty will impress upon them that whatever the state of their marriage, Charles and Diana must avoid lengthy periods out of each other's company,” the Sunday Times wrote. Charles, 38, is 12 years older than Diana. LIKES COUNTRY And while the prince is a country lover interested in architecture, classical music, and gardening, the princess shows 4 pi for city life: and parties. Charles has spent most of the last five weeks at Balmoral. Diana, who's known to dislike the royal Scottish retreat, stayed in London. The couple mad. headlines again Tuesday after Diana took their two sons to a restaurant and the movies — without Charles. The Sun tabloid showed a picture of five-year-old Prince William with a caption reading: “Anybody seen my dad!” “This whole problem was created by the press,” Brooks-Baker said. “When Charles and Diana married, the press made this up to be the love match of the century and they added it to all the thrills that go with a Hollywood wedding. “This was a semi-arranged marriage which pleased all bers of the Royal Family at the time. Today it is a Brooks-Baker said it’s si that a opinior poll during the weekend showed the popularity of the monarchy is falling for the first time since the Second World War. very workable marriage in which there is no problem of any importance. The Prince of Wales clearly have a great respect for each other and for the job each is doing.” Solo vacations cost Single travellers usually pay more By FELICITY MUNN Canadian Press Travelling solo can be an exhilarating experience, but chances are you'll pay for it. ly heard A freq’ from single that much of the tourist industry — including hotels, cruises and tour operators — takes advantage of them to make an extra buck. Virtually all hotels charge a so-called “single supple- ment” — its makes business sense to do so. The charge means a single guest pays substantially more than if he or she had a room-mate. The Royal York hotel in Toronto, for instance, charges $127 a night for two for a basic room; a lone guest pays $112 for the same room. At the mid-range Quality Inn, it's $85 for two and $75 for one person. Because of the hotels’ policy, package vacations that include accommodation also cost the single traveller extra. Such surcharges can range up to more than 25 per cent of the cost of the package. But there are ways to get around that. OFFERS SOLUTION The most obvious solution is to turn to Club Med or a similar outfit geared to single travellers. There's no single supplement at the vast majority of Club Med villages; solo travellers are assigned room-mates of the same sex when they arrive. “We've been operating this way for 37 years world wide,” says Club Med’s Leslie Macleod, “and the room-shar- ing thing has worked very well.” She estimates half of Club Med clients are solo vacationers. However, Club Med may not be the kind of holiday you had in mind. Travel agent Melanie Petit, who deals with many solo travellers at an American Express agency in Montreal, has some other suggestions You can save money, she says, by going for last-minute deals. “If you come in two weeks ahead in the right season, like right now (the off-season), you can get (a week down south) for $399 and the supplement may be $150 or maybe $200, but still within your means.” Or you can get a regular package deal but ask to share. Escorted bus tours of Europe and elsewhere are popular with solo travellers over 40, Petit says, because many of the operators try to find a compatible roommate for you; if they can’t, some will charge a supplement, but others won't, even if you end up with a room to yourself. Tour outfits that cater to the 18-35 age bracket — particularly ones offering hiking, biking and camping excur- sions — are also a good bet. Some don't charge a supplement because so many of their clients are single, while others will try to match you up with a room-mate. Another good idea is to book a flight and hotel separately. “T’'ve been to Cancun twice,” Petit says, “and I bought a ticket for $200 or $300 and got a hotel for $40 a night. The other who's on a package is going to pay $80 or $100 a night.” That's a particularly good technique if you're going to Florida, she adds, where the single supplement can range up to $600. The other solution, of course, is to persuade someone to travel with you. In Montreal, there's even a club that matches people for trips. Club Vis-a-Vis, while not a travel agency, introduces prospective travel companions who get to know each other and eventually, if all goes well, make travel plans. ‘The object is compatibility, says owner David Woolf, and the process can take a few months. “We can’t help the last-minute traveller who wants to avoid the single supple- ment.” Woolf plans to open a branch in New York this fall and one in Toronto early next year. OFFERS SOLUTION Horizon, a Toronto-based tour operator which caters mainly to over-40s, has another solution. Its regular news- letter to past clients includes a single-traveller column; people can write in about their interest in travelling with someone with a similar outlook. Discreet introductions are made well ahead of the pro- jected trip, says Horizon's Stephen Burnett. “We've had quite a few people who've found interesting companions and had a cost benefit as well,” he says. If worst comes-to worst, you'll just have to pay the extra cost. Horizon charges $3,947 a person for an all-inclusive, 18-day escorted tour of Scandinavia. That's based on double occupancy at the hotels along the way. If you're on your own, you pay $498 more.
