Grads together for first time To the skirl of bagpipes, 150 graduates of Selkirk College programs filed into their seats June 8 at the Castl for the first all-campus graduation in the college’s history. Until this 25th anniversary year, each of the college’s campuses staged its own graduation cere- mony. More than 600 graduates from all of the — 30 program arenas were listed in the pro- or The afternoon event was emceed by John Aslin, college registrar, and welcoming messages were delivered by college president Leo Perra, Elizabeth Fleet, chairman of the college board, and Ianthe Warner, speaking on behalf of instruc- tors. Special guest speaker was Garry Merkel, a 1976 graduate of the college’s forestry program, who is now in charge of resource management for all B.C. Indian reserves. He spoke to the grads about success, how it is measured and how it is achieved. “Success has less to do with the neighborhood, the size of your house or whether or not everyone on your block has a manicured lawn,” Merkel said. “Doing something you like to do for a living is how you are successful.” Department heads, or their representatives, then presented the graduates who received a scroll from Perra and congratulations from Fleet. Business administration graduate Chris Seggewiss of Nelson delivered the valedictory address to his fellow graduates and spoke know- ingly of conquering one’s fears. “Too often it is only fear that holds you back from achieving your full potential,” Seggewiss said.
