Keevil, Chairman and Acting Chief Executive Officer, announced an unaudited consoli dated loss of $36.8 million for the three months ended March 31, 1993. This compares with a toss of $4.9 million for the compara- ble period last year, which includ- ed a before tax gain on sale of Investment of $6.5 million. The Corporation's sales for the three months were $291.5 million com- pared with sales of $329.2 mil- lion in the same period last year. After providing for dividends on preferred shares, the first quar- ter loss was $0.47 per common share compared with a loss of $0.07 per common share in the Same period last year. Operating profits were lower than 1992 levels. All base metal prices, except copper, were below 1992 levels for the comparable quarter. The weaker Canadian dollar only partially offset this negative effect. The consolidated income and resource tax provi- sion totalled $2.0 million (recov- ery) and reflects the fact that the Corporation cannot currently rec- ognize the tax benefit of losses in foreign tax jurisdictions. ‘ The Mining and Integrated Metals business segment had a first quarter operating loss of $22.2 million compared with an operating profit of $6.0 million in the same quarter last year. Sales were $226.9 million compared with $255.8 million. The decrease in operating profit is attributed to lower metal prices.
