Arms Motor Hotel Inst week.

meeting” survives from the
19th Century, not all visitors to
the British Columbia camp
meeting will stay in tents,
though some are planning to do
just that.

‘Life After Death
Gaining Believers

Life after death is no
longer just a superstition—it is
supported by so much data that
some doctors and_ scientists
whole-heartedly believe in it,
says Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-
Ross, an authority on death and
dying. .

Dr. Kubler-Ross said she
began to believe in life after
death after listening to the
accounts of more than 1,000
people who had almost died.
She said they told her they
were consciously aware of
shedding their bodies and were
fully aware of their surround-
ings.

There was never any
panic, fear or pain and they
were serene and perfectly at
peace, Dr. Kubler-Ross said ina
speech at the University of
Toronto.

“Because it has been veri-
fied without a shadow of a
doubt that people have the
ability to shed their bodies even
before the moment of death, I
now have something to say to
the parents of children who
have been brutally murdered,”
she told the audience. “At the
moment of death their child
was at peace with a perfectly
restored body.”

Born in Switzerland, Dr.
Kubler-Ross hitch-hiked to Pol-
and when she was 19 to nurse
victims of Second World War
concentration camps. She later
became a doctor.

It was while she was caring
for chronic -schizophrenics in
New York that she learned to
trust and listen to her patients,
She said she now applies this
lesson to the dying.

The federal government
will contribute $1 million to the
private sector for projects and
activities for Canadian partici-
pation in the International Year
of the Child, the minister of
national health and welfare
announced last week.

Monique Begin anticipates
the federal contribution for the
International Year of the Child
will be administered by a
Canadian commission composed
of representatives of the fed-
eral and provincial govern-
ments, voluntary organizations
and Canadian citizens who have
contributed to the improved
well being of children and
families.

Details of the establish-
ment of the commission will be
announced later this month
when consultations with the
provinces and the private sec-
tor have been completed.

The $1 million federal con-
tribution is in addition to other
projects to be undertaken by
federal departments as well as
the administration costs of the
commission. The latter will be
paid for by the national health
and welfare ministry.

$1,500 Damage
In Two -Car
Collision

Charges are pending after
a two-car collision on Syringa
Creek Road caused slight in-
juries to three persons Sunday.

Local RCMP said a vehicle
driven by Kate Gritchen of
Blueberry Creek collided with a
vehicle driven by Tony Owen
Donald of Robson.

Police said two passengers
in Donald's vehicle complained
of bruises and Gritchen com-
plained of a sore neck after the
accident, which caused $1,500
damage.

see filling shelves are auxi-
liaries.

to explain the problem.

In the past two years, the |

number of auxiliaries in any
given store has been roughly
halved. This is a result of two
things: 1} The government is
trying to crank even more
money out of the liquor busi-
ness than the already out-
rageous profits it realizes; and
2) at present there is an absurd
formula in use which deter-
mines the number of workers in
a store for any given week,

NUMBER ONE IS SELF-
explanatory, but I would like to
clarify number two.

This formula, as far as I
can tell, assigns a certain
number of minutes to perform
any given task. According to
the amount of business a store
does it is given a maximum
number of man-hours to accom-
plish these tasks. It is quite

so slow on week nights that
there are always two super-
visors standing on the floor
doing little more than growing
older.

Don Murdoch, the young
hockey star from Cranbrook
who has been suspended for a
year from playing in the NHL
after pleading guilty to pos-
session of cocaine, says he made
a mistake. Obviously it’ wasn't
the right kind of mistake.

If he had gone out on to the
“ice and beaten another player's
brains out, he might have fared
better. By Mr. Ziegler's defini-
tion, that would have been only
human nature.

It seems taking drugs, or
at least getting caught with
them, isn't human nature. But
hypocrisy, as Mr. Ziegler has

tors of this formula are ob-
viously completely.out of touch
with the realities of a liquor
store.

The bulk of its clientele are
-retired pensioners, This results
in the following (through no
fault of theirs): 1) They take
much longer to get through a
sale—simply to get out their
money, put away their change
and move past the till; 2) they
need a great deal of assistance
in finding products; and 3) they
frequently need help in getting
their purchases out of the store.

I KNOW FOR A FACT
that none of this is in the
staffing formula. Asa result the
staff of that store is working at

This, in fact, is the way it used
to be, and the stores were then
much more efficient.

The final problem is man-
agement’s treatment of auxi-
liaries. Because of the drastic
cut in work available for auxi-
liaries, most of them find them-
selves working in a minimum of
four, and as many as seven,
different liquor stores each
month.

THIS OPENS ANOTHER
can of worms,

Every store is unique, with
its own routines, warehouse
layouts and shelf placements.
Just when- an auxiliary is
getting familiar with a store, he
or she is packed off to another
one to learn a complete new set
of procedures. The inefficiency
of this practice should be ob-
vious. Also, when an auxiliary
moves from a store with an
easy discipline lo one that is
strict, he or she tends to take it
out on the customers.
