E2 Bridge Beat By JOY KEILLOR Opening Leads Opening leads must be divided into two parts — leads against no-trump con- tracts and leads against suit contracts. Defending against no- tramp and suit contracts is so different we might say they are different games. Leads Against suit Contracts You may choose any one of three basic reasons for your opening Jead against a suit contract, 1. attacking 2. waiting 3. interfering 1) Attacking leads These are the leads that immediately win or quickly establish second and third- round winners for your side. Quick winners are ‘ace-king combinations. To establish winners you “spend an honor” in an honor combination sequence by playing the top card of your sequence. Also the lead of your partner's bid suit, or the lead of a singleton. With A,K.xx; your lead is the king first. The lead of the king promises the ace or . queen. Should you have A,K alone and the ability to ruff the third round, lead the ace first. then the king telling partner you have only two cards in this suit (the high-low echo). In all other leadable hon- or sequences, you lead the top K,Q,Jx, Q,J,10x, J,10,9x, K,Q,10x, Q,J,9x, J,10,8x. When leading your part- uer's bid suit, your proper lead holding exactly two cards is always the top one. Holding three cards in the suit, lead the top card in three cases: A) When you have no honors (top of nothing); B) When you hold the ace (the opponents will prob- ably be short in this suit); C) When you hold two . honor cards in sequence. In all other cases when you hold three or more cards in your partner's bid suit with an honor, lead the smallest card. After having led top of nothing from three cards, be careful to follow next with the * next highest card in that suit so that your partner will know that a lower card is missing. With four or more cards in partner's suit, play the fourth down from the top * card, There are two logical exceptions — holding the ace or touching honors. Lead the top or it might cost your side a trick if you don't. 2) Waiting Leads ere are many com- binations where what you Jead may cost you a trick or set up tricks for the declarer. These combinations should be avoided, waiting for the lead of these suits to be made by someone else. These combin- ations are: 1, Axxx — If you lead this suit you may establish the king for declarer. However, the ace in a five or six-card suit may be led. 2. Kxxx — Hf you lead away from a king, you may set up declarer’s A,Q to win two tricks, when it should have WINLAW, B.C. totesi took” COZY COMFORT No. 40 A complete cast iron unit ° fakes wood up to 2 feet ng ° CEE olted even heat, no thermostat required * Fuel lasts 8-10-15 hours toatilling Exceptional fust efficiency based on o front-end com- bustion system — burns like a cigar. Your king, where it sits, could have been a winner plus capturing the queen from the declarer. 3, Short suits headed by ace, king, queen or jack. When you have these combinations and no attack- ing lead, try to get out of the lead by: A) Leading trumps (es "pecially when you hold two or three); B) Leading the fourth card down from a suit headed by the queen, jack, 10 or a lower card. C) Leading top of noth- ing. (Top of a two or three- card worthless suit.) 23. Interfering Leads Lead a trump when the bidding has indicated that the declarer will cross-ruff a hand or will trump their losers in the dummy. * Examples: Ww Pass Pass’ Pass s Ww 1 Pass 3NT Pass Pass Pass Lead Your Long Suit When you hold one trump or four trumps, and your partner has not bid, lead your long side suit. With a singleton trump your partner may hold four. The object of this lead is to find declarer’s short suit and force him to ruff, cutting down his trump holding down to your size.
