Letters lack insights -

OTTAWA (CP) — The collected letters of John George
Diefenbaker, his parents, two wives and brother Elmer
constitute another chapter in giving the late prime minister
his place in Canadian history.

But new profound insights are scarce in the

correspondence.

“T want you to be honest and upright in all you do and
don't try to get rich on other people's money.” his mother,
Mary, writes in typical no-nonsense manner after
Diefenbaker finally was elected to the House of Commons in

1940.

She adds, as the acknowledged driving force of the
family: “I don’t want to preach to you but I mean all I say
and I think you will do just what I want you to do...”

Her oldest son didn't always do just what his mother
wanted — she felt neglected when Ottawa business kept him
away from her 50th wedding anniversary and let him.know
it.

VITAL ROLES

But the correspondence presented in Personal Letters
of a Public Man underlines the vital roles played in
Diefenbaker's career by his mother and wives Edna and
Olive in their turn.

Editor Thad McIlroy says his selection of 250 letters
breaks new ground, but he does warn that Diefenbaker
tended to pull his written punches because he was “very
much aware that he would occupy a prominent position in
Canadian history.”

The’ Chief himself acknowledges in a 1946 letter to
Elmer that “Edna says I write the same kind of letter to her

as I do to Mother and you. It is without information.
However, if I only write when I can think of something to
write about, there would never be a letter.” xs

The most penetrating and certainly heart-wrenching

= letters are from Edna who, as Toronto historian J.L.

Granatstein notes in his perceptive introduction, arrived in
Ottawa “pretty, slender and vivacious” and spent her last
years in a torment of depression and anxiety.

around the world can expect to pay more to start their

varieties to give them more flavor, or mixed with the

finer-quality Central American types to give greater
volume. §

As a result of the expected poor harvest, some
traders say Brazil may not be able to meet all its
international commitments over the next two years and

Iron Maiden pulls out all the stops on its first
full-length concert album, Live After Death (Capitol),
offering an ear-piercing 100-minute capsule of its
24-country World Slavery Tour, which wrapped up last
summer after almost 200 dates. :

This is tough stuff from Britain's premier heavy
metal quintet and it goes the distance in recapturing the
excitement of the group's visually spectacular live show.
Amid the characteristic thrashing and bashing, there's
even tl ional glimmer of musical inspiration.

Bruce Djckinson, one of the genre's more indefatig-
able screamiérs, bawls out his lines as if intent on doing
irreparable damage to his. vocal cords, while Adrian
Smith and Dave Murray color the backup with their
frequent contrapuntal guitar licks.

ONE SURVIVES
Perhaps in keeping with the veil Di ker drew over

bassist Steve Harris's ambitious Rime of the Ancient
Mariner, based on the Coleridge poem.

Lavishly packaged, complete with Maiden’s typically

that portion of his life, only one of his letters to Edna
survives from that period. She was dead of leukemia by
early 1951 and by early 1952 Diefenbaker and Olive
Freeman Palmer, a widow first met in his young Saskatoon
days, were exchanging love letters whose language of
deepest affection and devotion continued until her death in
1976.

The fact that politics was Diefenbaker's life is amply
reiterated in his letters. After he lost the party leadership in
1967, aged 72, there was still plotting as well as extensive
travel.

And until Elmer's death in 1971, aged 73, there was
always Elmer to count on, amiable and loyal 100 per cent.

Elmer writes when the dog Happy II was killed by a
‘car: “I recall the morning that Mr. Budgie (the budgie bird I
gave Mother on her birthday) died. It was a very bad day for
me and I was most attached to him.” 55

statistics and_plenty of action pictures.

The fans will love it.

You might well suspect that Stryper isn't your
everyday metal outfit after ‘singer Michael Sweet
launches into the title tune of Soldiers Under Command
(Passport):

“We are the soldiers under God's command, We hold
His two-edged sword within our hands; We're not
ashamed to stand up for what's right. We win without sin,
it's not by our might.”

This is no gimmick: the California power quartet,
whose name reflects a biblical passage referring to “God's
stripe.” have all the spiritual conviction of an evangelist
preacher and, at their peak, 10 times the passion.

replacing the typical demonic cliches with spiritual
imagery, and filtering the “sex and drugs” from their
brand of rock ‘n’ roll.

Hard-core followers of the form may dismiss this as
molten metal — kind of drippy — but despite the
‘sanitized lyrical content, Stryper is ‘capable of delivering
with enough force to shatter a stained-glass window.

Where the band really stumbles is with their
ill-advised inclusion of two achingly beautiful ballads,
First Love and Together As One, performed with
choirboy sweetness.

Both cuts are well-intentioned and serve to highlight
the singer's range, but they effectively Send the band’s
rock credibility into a tailspin. Among the audience
Stryper wants to reach, such delicate material doesn't
have a prayer.

Treading the line between hard rock and heavy
metal, California’s Y and T pack a wallop with their
punchy sixth album, Down For the Count (A and M).

its way through metal fury (Anything For Money) and
more temperate rock ballads (Face Like an Angel; Hands
of Time) without ever losing steam. ~
Anytime at All is a key cut, both energetic and
melodic, as is their raucous rendition of the Loggins and
Messina standard Your Momma Don't Dance.

Don't Tell Me What to Wear could cut it as the
definitive young rebel cry, but it’s laced as much with
humor as with vitriol. :

have delayed construction of
a $210-million newsprint mill
in Pend Oreille County until
spring and possibly longer,
says a spokesman for a con-
sortium of investors.

“The price of newsprint
dropping has taken a little of
the value out of the project,”
said Terry Brown, secretary
of Great Lakes Forest Prod-
ucts Ltd. of. Thunder Bay,
Ont.
