Castlagar News _!2-wory 20, 1988 Cannery save for museum PORT EDWARD, B.C. (CP) — Protected by heavy gloves and a warm winter coat, Gladys Blyth ignored the chilly northern wind that whistled through the walls of the century-old abandoned cannery and conjured a vision from the past. Below her, the staccato sound of waves slapping against pilings punctuated her conversation as she talk ed about an almost forgotten way of life on British Col umbia’s own Cannery Row: the mouth of the Skeena River on B.C.’s_ northern coast - During the heyday of the salmon industry, 18 canner ies — all self-contained com. munities jutted out on pilings from*the now over grown shoreline. Only two Skeena canneries still stand and this one, North Pacific Cannery, is the oldest and in condition, said Blyth, 67, is an amateur historian who has spent 20 years trying to preserve what remains of B.C.'s coast al cannery heritage. Supplied mainly by native fishermen who worked the fishing grounds in small dory like boats, the canneries were B.C.'s first industry. Fatal TORONTO (CP) — who almost make it to the top levels of the business world, or who make it and then get pushed off or fall off, have three fatal flaws that are “the kiss of death,” says a U.S. management consultant. Half are perceived as being unable to adapt, as having performance problems and as being too ambitious, says Randall White, an author of Breaking the Glass Ceiling (Addison-Wesley, $21.95) Almost all the women have one of the three flaws, White adds. “These three are the kiss of death,” he told about 450 middle-and-upper-level U.S and Canadian business man Women ST. Bookkeeping Services that lived here were part of a unique coastal way of life,” said Blyth. “They had to depend on themselves for all their needs. LIVED APART “It wasn't just a cannery that operated here. This was acannery village with Indian, Japanese, Chinese and white populations living and work ing totally segregated lives.” The cannery now is a museum. Restoring it and converting part of the kilo metre-long village into res. taurants, craft shops and overnight accommodation is the main project for the Northcoast Marine Museum Society, of which Blyth is a director. The society has an enormous task, said adminis. trator Michael Kolesar. Many of the pilings are rotten and if not replaced soon, parts of the cannery complex could crumble into the sea. By saving the cannery, the society will be agers at a conference here. The three-day conference that began Monday, The New Workplace Synergy, aims to improve working relation. ships between men and women. It’s sponsored by firms such as the Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. and Crown Life Insurance Co. and Ontario Hydro, a public utility. Often the only difference between a successful and an unsuccessful woman is that the unsuccessful woman didn’t get any feedback, crit icism or coaching from sup eriors, White said. ADMITS FEAR “I've had senior-level men tell me they didn’t want to From then.until being perm anently closed in 1981, the site was used for rendering fish and storing vessels and nets, In 1985 it was declared a historical site. Kolesar envisions the can- nery matching Barkerville, the preserved Gold Rush town in the southern B.C. Interior, as a historical draw NOT REPRESENTED “We feel the fishing in. dustry has not been repre sented anywhere, yet it is one of our major natural re- sources and it was the first major industry in B.C.,” he said. The society is gathering marine artifacts from the north coast and storing them at the cannery for the day they have the funding to properly display them. The artifacts tell of the hardships and dangers of life on the coast, as well as the social attitudes of the time flaws found talk to the women because they are afraid (the women) will ery. I call that the $100. million mistake to derail women at that level. It takes an investment of 20 years to get a woman to that level.” Any psychological or be- havioral differences between male and female senior man agers may be more myth than reality, he said As a training manager with the Centre for Creative Leadership in North Caro- lina, White and two col- leagues interviewed 390 male and 35 female senior execu tives who worked in firms employing more than 5,000 * Small Business & Contractors +P * Farm-Logging IRENE MORTIMER 365-2223 SOLIGO, KOIDE & JOHN CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS 615 Columbia Ave. (Upstairs) Castlegar Phone 365-7745 Henry John, B.Sc.C.A.
