Pressures should be checked when tires are cold. For every nine degrees of temperature chonge, your tire pressure changes by one pound. If you are carrying an extra load ar going to be travelling at high speeds or pulling a trailer, you should add two to four pounds of pressure, but hever exceed maximum cold recommended pressure marked on sidewall of tire. WHEEL ALIGNMENT Every car has specitications for wheel alignment, provided fby the manufacturer. The purpose of wheel alignment is to make sure thot your wheels are all travelling parallel to each other so that they wear evently, Camber and castory adjustment are made so that the car steers properly without having to be held from going to one side or the other and help the cor return toa straight line of travel after making @ turn. Wheel balancing is often misunderstood os being part of wheel ~ jt isn't. Due to a amount of dedication and Trail O i indi are inning to show that things are on the upswing. ZINC OPERATIONS With the completion of modernization projects earlier this year, zine ion has ii d and it i to improve with a very positive outlook for the remainder of the year. Most recently, zinc production was 98 per cent of the planned forecast. Concentrate from the Red Dog mine in Alaska is being fed into the zinc circuit on a regular basis and at an ever-increasing rate. Recently, 50 per cent of the charge, or feed, to the roasters was Red Dog material, consistent with the long-term plan. Operations in the leaching plants are also improving of late. The pressure leach plant is operating at approximately 200 per cent of designed capacity, while one day in February the sulphide leaching plant plated 930 tons of cathode zinc — something which had not been achieved in over a year. On the safety side, the melting plant ‘‘S’’ shift set a Cominco melting plant record by working in that plant for three years and five months without a lost-time accident. EMISSION ABATEMENT Due to the nature of its business, Trail Operations experiences a great deal of activity every day, which is evident in the high degree of both company and private vehicular traffic. With this traffic comes the problem of materials being tracked off the property on the wheels of these trucks and cars. To overcome this problem, crews have been ications in three areas. -plant roads are being modified to separate all private vehicles (cars travelling to parking lots or office buildings) from contact with plant haul routes. As an important part of this program, funds for a new road to employee parking areas were recently approved. This project is expected to be completed by the end of June. Second, Cominco has reduced the number of vehicles licensed for operation on public roads, thereby restricting vehicles to the plant area as much as possible, Third, all concentrate trucks are washed in the new truck washing facility before they leave the property. This facility was completed last fall as part of the concentrate handling project, one of the zinc projects that were critical to the ing of Red Dog As a positive measure against dust control, work continues with the consolidation of the major residue stockpiles in the storage area at at the north end of the plant, part of which was paved last fall to enhance this Drainage and is being incorporated into this project as it advances. By the beginning of summer, the two stockpiles will be covered with heavy-duty tarpaulin-type covers, at a cost of approximately $250,000 each, to reduce the possibi of airborne lead contamination. Efforts to reduce dust emissions from truck movement on the roads leading to this storage area include: © sweeping the haul roads daily with a new road sweeper; © an intensive road washing program, with a second truck rented; * using static sprinklers in some areas to keep roads wet; and © modifying truck traffic routes to avoid conflict with other in-plant vehicular traffic to minimize the tracking of material off-site. The stockpiled material will eventually be consumed in the new smelter. NEW LEAD SMELTER Revisions to the new QSL lead smelter are still on hold pending definitive process test results expected in the second quarter of the year. Lurgi, the process supplier, has advised Cominco that - satisfactory physical results were obtained in recent preliminary tests which used natural gas for reduction. While the test work carries on, Cominco will continue to work closely with Lurgi on the QSL modification plans.-Although the final design of the lead smelter and a start-up date are not set, Cominco is committed to completing and starting up the new smelter as soon as possible. The plant, as currently constructed, is suitable for either revisions to the QSL process or conversion to another available technology should the need arise. Most of the plant’s equipment, systems and structure are not affected by the fundamental technology selection. For example, the oxygen plant, gas-handling system and slag and bullion treatment are compatible with any changes that may be necessary. As a backup, Cominco is continuing to investigate and is prepared to have test work done on other commercial-scale lead smelting processes. peat of sulphur, fluoride and heavy metals. As well, Operation of the old lead smelter is continuing at about 80 per several stations collect dust samples which are cent capacity or better and can be sustained at that level until final routinely analyzed and reported to the government. revisions have been made to the new smelter. The plant appears to be getting the better of maintenance problems experienced of late, with the sinter plant reaching 90 per cent of its operating target and the lead furnaces operating well. As well, an improved level of hygiene follows this improvement in operation. A lift truck carries a load of zinc slabs to a machine which straps the bundle into a shipping unit.
