West Kootenay communities built with pride and spirit In publishing Update "91, the ual for those of us so intimately in- volved in the of the British Columbia, indeed elsewhere in Canada. But the main thing that strikes me as we try to assemble the of what has issue to grab those extra few minutes in which to reflect on means in our community in particular and the West Kootenay region in general. This year, the job is made a great deal easier, The long- awaited approval for Celgar Pulp Co.’s modernization and expan- operate, herald a period of Prosperity that will be envied by most smaller cities elsewhere in BURT CAMPBELL ... good things can and do happen here in the past year is that it’s people who make our community and our region work, That goes for industry, business and any of the many services which our area residents enjoy. Nothing just happens. People make things happen. And because the people of the West Kootenay show an uncommon measure of pride and progressive spirit, a willingness to work for the things in which they believe, good things can and do hap- pen here, very often despite the actions. and attitudes of higher levels. of government and the economic downturns that beset the world in general. Things can’t happen without people. Certainly over the years the people of Castlegar, Trail and lelson and our other surroun- ding cities, villages and towns have built good communities. Yes, we are located in one of the more climatically and geographically attractive areas of our province, But there are many other communities equally blessed in a natural sense. The difference has to be people. People willing to give of themselves, their time and their money to make things happen; people who are more inclined to get on with the job, rather than ask others to do it for them; People willing to invest their time and their money in their com- munities as a whole, and not just in their private enterprise. This edition, our premiere edition of the year, touches on only some of the accomplishmen- ts during the past year, on as many as we're able to report of the facilities and services that people. have made happen. We hope we've caught the Spirit of the West Kootenay, and we hope it’s catching. We hope, when people visit here, that they are impressed with the spirit of our people, with the positive attitude that we believe prevails. ° Bob Durkin... for 25 years, a name synonymous with Craftsmanship © and Exprtise!
