Linda Barnes? How about my latest find, Patri- cia D. Comwell, who has published five Kay Scarpetta detective novels since 1990? Beginning Wee he Oe Postmortem, which won the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony and Macavity Awards all in one year, Cornwell introduced a chief medical officer as her version of the sleuth. This person who seeks beyond the obvious is ndne other than Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Officer for the State of Virginia. Scarpetta’s home is Richmond, Virginia, where she runs the state morgue and functions as a foren- sic pathologist. In other words, after murdered bodies have been discovered and shipped to her lab, she cuts them up and tests to discover what happened. The details Cornwell gives us about the forensic procedures might be too gruesome for some readers. Those readers who suggested Com- well’s novels to me, however, were fascinated by the specifics of these lab procedures. They were intrigued that the information gained could lead to a killer's identity. Having worked in the forensic science field for a number of years before becoming a novelist, Cornwell takes us to the last blood cell of detail about this line of work. While the lab work par- ticulars are intriguing, the infor- mation arising from lab results is even more startling. In these novels, Scarpetta’s job takes her to the scene of a killing. Normally, she gets to take evidence samples before the body is touched After she has gathered tissue, blood and fibre samples from around a body, she authorizes the raws from forensic past Postmortem an award winning novel deaths. The more she examines the bodies and the death scenes, the closer she gets to the killer, | In this novel, the killer is like a away them, releases them in the backwoods with their hands tied and proceeds to a GORDON In Cruel and Unusual TURNER (1993), Scar- petta exam- ines the corpse of a boy who has had two patches of flesh removed from his body after he was killed. This clue leads back to a much earlier murder of a woman whose death had a similar profile. Cruel and Unusual intro- duces us to a bizarre killer named Temple Gault, who escapes just as the novel concludes. He appears again in Scarpetta's next two novels. + In The Body Farm (1994), he is suspected of being involved in the death of a young girl, but the murder turns out to be a copycat murder. We do, however, sense that Gault is not far away, plot- ting new horrors. In From Potter’s Field (1995), Scarpetta engages once again with Temple Gault. The scene is New York, rather than Virginia, and Scarpetta is called in because of the type of murder. Again, a young woman is brutalized and patches of her flesh are. missing. In a series of strange twists—the dead woman turns out to be Gault’s own sis- ter—the novel winds down to a heart-stopping finale beneath the streets of New York. As you can probably tell by now, the killers are men who have enormous problems— often problems connecting to women, sometimes physiologi- cal inadeq and fr body's removal. Later, she sets up the lab pro- cedures to uncover the body’s processes while it was dying. Thereafter, she works closely with police, detectives, and the FBL Cornwell has chosen serial killers and murdered women— and sometimes children—as her focus. In Postmortem (1990), Scarpetta must come to grips with a serial killer who is attract- ed to women by their voices. She figures out who the killer might be because of smells left at the crime-scene. In Body of Evidence (1991), Scarpetta must deal with bodies of women who have been slashed badly as they've been killed. She herself is the last target of this killer, and he comes to within inches of killing her, too. In All That Remains (1992), 365-5336 ‘OPEN SUNDAY FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE SUNDAY HOURS ARE AS FOLLOWS: P has to unravel the grue- some details of a series of couple mental imbalances resulting from childhood. The women or children attacked are often innocent vic- tims who are in the wrong place at the wrong time or who are friend- ly to people who normally can be trusted. Where have you heard about these situations before? Indeed, we're never allowed to forget that Scarpetta herself is an attractive woman who lives alone—and can be got to. Women, like Scarpetta, open their doors everyday to decent types who tum Out to be creeps—and who some- times murder almost at whim. Cornwell's novels are complex but accessible. She keeps us involved because the final details to solve the murders are kept from us until near the end. And we Say, as does,— "yes, oh my, yes”—that’s the missing link. And we speed through the final pages satisfied. Of the nearly 200 new albums I've reviewed since Jan.1, here are the 12 I liked Most, not necessarily the best. Check this list against your own and let's see how we do. 12. IN FROM | THE STORM Various Artists (RCA) ‘This Jimi Hendrix tribute album brings noted rockers together with the London Metropolitan § Orchestra to take Hendix's music to a place I think Jimi would've wanted to visit, Keys: “The Wind”, “Cries Mary” - Sting, “Spanish Castle Magic” - Sass Jordan. 11. TEETH & TISSUE The Headstones (MCA) This Ontario-based outfit makes nasty, jangly, guitar-driv- en rock & roll. They rock hard, but with a sly Doug & The Slugs sort of sense of humor. Keys: “Hindsight”, “Drop- ping Dime Size Drops.” 10. MADE IN HEAVEN Queen (Hollywood) The final album from a bril- liant band. Much of it was recorded in the months just prior to Freddie Mercury's death, lending the disc an overtly gloomy air and a strangely warm feel. Hey, I still love these guys. Key “I's a Beautiful Day”, “Mother Love.” 9. WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD Meat Loaf (MCA) I was surprised by this over- the-top album. Meat gives his best vocal performance on record, new vocal partner Patti Russo steams the place up and I'd put this band up against anyone. It’s not hip to like Meat Loaf, but I’ve never been hip. Keys: “I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)”, “Where The Rubber Meets The Road” . 8. RELISH Joan Osborne (Mercury) My favorite debut of the year. Joan has‘a brash, sultry quality to her songs and a voice that Sheryl Crowe aspires to. I can’t find one woman who likes this album. They must find overt sexuality embarrassing. Keys: “Right Hand Man”, “Let's Just Get Naked” . 7. GIN PALACE Barney Bentall (Epic) I have no idea why B B isn’t HUGE. I've been digging his stuff since ‘88. He’s made 3 other records and Gin Palace is the best ... he just keeps get- ting better. Keys: “Shattered”, “Do Ya”. 6. ALL YOU CAN EAT k.d. lang (Warner) It’s true that next to Nat King Cole, k.d. is my favorite crooner. More pop than torch, Eat isn’t as brutally confession- al and raw as Ingenue, but it does have a sweet way of invit- ing you inside. ) KEREIFF albums Keys: “Sexuality”, “If! Were You". 5. RAGGED ASS ROAD Tom Cochrane (EMI) He’s kept us waiting for this, but his time was obviously well spent. Much as I liked Mad Mad World, this baby just blows it right out of the tub. JOHN live acoustic reworkings of songs we already know for the most part. But as I said in the original Teview, it me fall in love with again. Keys: “Up On Cherry Blos- som Road”, “Crazy On You", “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You” . 3. JAGGED LITTLE PILL Alanis Morrissette (Atlantic) No doubt whatsoever about here. Don't recall reading about it in “Rock File?” I submitted a glowing review to The Sun, but the editor at that time (who has since vanished) lost it. Busy as I am, I didn't notice it was missing until researching today’s column. Alanis is a young gal from Ottawa and this is a powerful, emotional record that I can’t shake. Keys: “. 1d In My Pock- et”, “Ironic” 2. YOUR LITTLE SECRET Melissa Etheridge (Island) I've only had this a couple of weeks, but it’s pretty much a given that I fall in love with Melissa’s music. This is her most electric album to date and her words are as deep and pas- sionate as ever. I don’t just like the way this disc sounds, I like the way it feels, too. Keys: “Your Little Secret” and “This War Is Over”. As my brother Mike would say, “Wow.” 1. BALANCE Van Halen (Warner Bros.) I liked this when it first came out, but lately I can’t get it out of my head. It has some kind of grip on me... I can’t get through the day without hear- ing Balance at LEAST once. Keys: “I Can't Stop Loving You", “Big Fat Money” and “Take Me Back”. That's it! Thanks to Cori at MCA, Ralph at Warner Canada, Stephanie at A & M, Joe at Polygram, Trevor at Sony Music and all their fellow record reps for making 1995 a good year for “Rock File.” Thanks here in town go to Shirley, Stacy and everyone at Pete's TV for their help and a big, juicy thanks to Marilyn for allowing me to be a part of The Castlegar Sun. Some of my best Christmas- season memories go back almost 70 years ago to my family home at the Nichols Chemical Works on Burrard Inlet. | They are a symphony of sights, sounds, smells and the special, smal] events which still brighten the growing dimness of my mind. It was a time before pre-pack- aging, comer stores and Sunday openings, so there was no time for last-minute shopping. You either made it at home or you forgot about it. Christmas preparations were, therefore, begun early, Very carly. Right after Hallowe'en, for example, my mother would have the two-gallon crock of mince- meat, tangy and spicy, maturing beside the home-made pickle crock, wine-vinegary and piquantly sweet, auguries of good things to come. It would be followed almost immediately by the all-family affair of Christmas pudding and Christmas cake preparation in which everyone, from Grandma sors and, when we thought no one was looking, slipped one into our mouths. Such extravagant richness! Such flavor! Others of us sliced the green, gold and yellow hemispheres of candied orange and lemon, cit- ron and lime, or chopped plump, tan-coloured figs or dug the pits from the shiny dark-brown dates or peeled the transparent parchment skin from the raw suet and fed the fat, rosy lumps into the hand turned mincer for the Christmas pudding. Candied cherries went in whole, of course. In the midst of all of this Savory chaos, my mother supervised, sifted, mixed with a wood- en spoon and tasted everything until everything was right. Then into the greased paper Pans it all went like golden lava, or into the cloth-covered bowls, while all the erstwhile’ helpers crowded around to lick the spicy remains from pots and spoons. For days afterward, the house would redolent with the bak- ing of the \cakes in the coal and wood stove and ring with the See CHARTERS BB Here's hoping your Holiday Is smooth skating all the way.
