q'YI at( /h/f4 I='- _.;.. EPP-JALK There were two club events held over the past weekend in the district. On Saturday, the Legion West Kootenay Zone Dart tournament was held in Castlegar and on Sunday the Eagles one-day mixed curling 'spiel was held in Trail. Both were wellattended and well-run and from all reports, enjoyed to the fullest by those in attendance. Taking them in order, I have a very good and complete report on the Legion Darts from Dennis Hirons. Sorry, I had the wrong spelling for your name in last week's piece, Dennis. When I say this was a complete report, I mean just that. I would like to give it to you verbatim but space won't allow. However, I would like to give you the highlights of Dennis' report on the tourney. It was a day-long affair with competition in four events: singles, doubles, four-man teams and the ladies and gents high score of the day. The singles event was to end in a playoff between Ron Young and Dennis Hirons of Rossland and was eventually taken by Young in a comeback victory after being down one game. In the doubles, the same two players wound up in a battle for the top spot along with teammates, Frank Harris and Wayne Delio. After a desperate battle, it was Harris and Delio who emerged victorious. The team event matched the Castlegar quartet of John and Sandy Wiltshire, Richard Maddocks and Russel Leamy against the high-flying Rossland foursome of Harris, Hirons, Young and Delio with Frank Harris providing the winning touch with bis last dart of the final playoff. The ladies' and men's high score of the day was the final event and the ladies' competition was taken by Jean Peterson of Nakusp to break · the chance of a sweep by the Rossland club. However, Hirons came out on top of a shoot-out between teammate Darrell Morrow and John Wiltshire of Castlegar to take the men's high. Secco's rink of Trail won the ladies' individual award. One category was reserved for Nelson in both ladies' and men's. This was the booby prize department won by the Stewart rink for the ladies and the all-right rink for the men. It was indeed a day for renewing old acquaintances. I ran into more of my old work-mates from the hill. Bill Hughes, Russ Ferguson, Noel Plamondon, John Danen and so many Scotsmen. It's too long of a list to start on here. It seemed like being in Glasgow on a Saturday night. The Trail Aerie clubrooms were the scene for a bang-up Chinese supper and the awards presentation masterminded by Alun Jones acting for president Will Salewski, who was ailing in hospital. We would like to say thanks to the Trail group for being fine hosts for this great day's production. #ilb !wry Pepper ' Let's hope we have as good a turn-out for out Legion one-day 'spiel od March 25 in Rossland'• Curling Club. Bob Glover passed alo114 the following: The Kokan8' Derby Club Annual Meeting will be taking place Friday evening'; March 16 at 7:30 in the Rossland Curling Lounge. providing the winning touch with his Jut dart of the final playoff. The ladies' and men's high score of the day was the final event and the ladies' competition was taken by Jean Peterson of Nakusp to break · the chance of a sweep by the Roaland club. However, Hirons came out top of a shoot-out between teammate Darrell Morrow and John Wiltshire of Castlegar to take the men's high. This brought the tourney to a close with a fine Oourisb and afterwards a banquet and awards presentation was held, put on by the Castlegar LA. In closing this report, Dennis gave a lot of credit for the successful tourney to president Jim Moore of Castlegar, co-ordinator, Denny Tucker of Castlegar and West Kootenay zone sports chairman Doug Mcisaac of Trail. This comer-would like to wish all the zone champs the best of luck in the provincials to be held in Squamisb, Aprll 21-22. The Eagles 'spiel was a dandy. Each rink was scheduled to play three, four-end games but owing to the fact that there were an odd number of men's rinks, one of them drew a bye. However, Bill Hughes of Trail came up with a rink composed of Hazel Pengelly of Rossland and two ladies from Nelson to fill in the blank spots and this situation turned out very well. From Rossland Aerie No. 10, it was David Davidow's foursome, Norm Harry and Jack McDonald in the men's side and Eileen McDonald and Donna Price on the ladies'. The men's winners overall were the Nelson teams, who compiled 29 points, followed by Rossland with 22, who just nosed out Trail by one point. On the ladies' side, it was Trail's No. 3 team edging Trall's No. 2 by a single point, 14-13, followed by Rossland's No. 1 and No. 2 teams tied with five points each. Bill Heichert's rink from Trail took top individual men's award with 14 points followed by Roy Swanson of Nelson at 12. Roy, incidentally, was the oldest curler in the 'spiel Barb on
