You consider opening a bid of oneina suit when you hold 13 points. Important: Do not open a 13- point hand unless your hand contains: two defensive tricks and a rebiddable suit or two biddable suits, When you hold 14 or more C. With two five-card suits bid the higher ranking one first, and rebid the lower (bid it twice). D. With two suits — one a six-card suit and the other a five-card suit, bid the six-card suit first, and bid and rebid the five-card suit before you men- tion the six-card suit again, Opener holds: 4AKQI10 v¥9876 52 and that’s enough for a night on the town, And taxi fare home, According to the, B.C, Automobile Association, a mo- torist can easily save money by turning a few gas-saving tricks into regular driving habits: e- On first bid, bid longer suit (hearts). The second bid will be the five-card suit. Third pid will be a rebid of the five-card suit which is a higher ranking suit and will by 16 per cent, Fuel Lines — simply tightening all fuel lines will eliminate leaks which can t gasoline for a cark mix. If air can't get through the filter, more gas is used to make up the mix. Changing a dirty alr filter, can improve mileage by 10 per cent, Starting Off — if the car starts from a stop smoothly, the gas required for power is reduced by 75 per cent. Think of the ~ number of times you stop-and- goand ber that gas costs wasted gallons of fuel a year. Ignition System — the longer it takes to start the car the more gas is used. Good points, pluge and condensor will help as long as the battery and wiring syatem are good. = * Spark Plugs — a single mis- firing plug can cut mileage by 10 per cent. That can cost $4.60 for every 100 miles, Faulty Choke — a stubborn or stuck choke forces the engine to suck too much gasoline. This can cut gas mileage by 80 per cent, or $13.60 for every 100 miles, notes the BCAA. Clogged Air Filters — a car uses a certain ratio of air to you over $600 per year. Tire Pressure — underinflated tires can cost more than a mile per gallon — at a coat of $2.30 + per 100 miles, Air is still free — gasoline: is decidedly not. Put air in the tires instead of extra gas in the tank, Idle Warm Up — never leave the engine idling to warm jt up {except in severly cold weath- er), it wastes gasoline and can cause premature engine wear, Never race the engine when it is cold — besides wasting gas it annoys the neighbors. Seat Belts — wearing seat belts can conserve gasoline in many ways: less likely relatives will have to drive to visit you in the hospital, ambul: will not waste fuel rushing to the scene of ‘the accident (high speed driving causes greater fuel belted in alds in maintaining an even foot on the accelerator, None of these gas-saving hints will intrude on your personal driving style, says the BCAA, and the extra bit of money spent on maintenance | will be returned to your wallet or purse in the form of lower gasoline coats. | indicate a six-five il very clearly. Simple, is it not? * * . Questions? Any unusual hands? Write Joy Keillor, care of Box 8007, Castlegar, B.C. points and t tricks, you have what is known as a ‘mandatory opening’ hand. You must open the auction — re- gardless of whether your hand is rebiddable. How to choose a suit when opening the bidding: Best — A major suit (spades or hearts) with five or more cards in the suit. Next Best — A four-card minor suit (diamonds or clubs). Third Best — The better three-card minor suit (diamonds or clubs). When your hand contains two five-card majors, open the highest ranking, spades, even if it has no high cards in it: Spades xxxxx Hearts AKQJx Diamonds x Clubs Ax Your partner should sup- port you with at least six points in his hand and three or more spades. If partner doesn't sup- port your spade opening bid, then rebid your hearts. You opened spades, so you promised five to begin with. When you bid the heart suit after the spade suit you only promise four hearts but the rebid of the heart suit now shows it was also five long. An ideal trump suit has eight or more cards in the com- bined hands with high honor cards. Should you happen to open a suit that has no high card count, you have a partner! Partner's high card points will probably be in the suit you bid. Five and six card suits: A. With suits of unequal length, bid longer suit first. B, With suits of equal length, bid the higher ranking suit first.
