A wild gunfight took place. Morton and one of his men, Frank Baker, managed to escape but were later surrounded in an old shack. The seige lasted two days. Finally, with the promise that their lives would be spared, they surrendered to the posse. Their bullet riddled bodies were found later by some sheepherders. The posse continued to hunt and kill Tunstall’s enemies until their own leader, Dick Brewer, was killed. When this hap- pened the organized posse disbanded, but * many of its number stayed together. At the gang's head was the boy with the infectious smile, Billy the Kid. Billy replied, ‘No court in New Mexico . would give me a fair deal.
