Following the candlelit ceremony honoring the pledges, four members were read the “Ritual of Affirma- tion.” Those who had completed their first full year in Beta Sigma Phi were Debbie Ewing, Lois Roberts and Anna Langille of Xi Gamma Rho and Philomena Archambault of Alpha Phi The 30 Sorority sisters who attended the banquet enjoyed a delicious meal then continued with special presentations and awards. Perfect attendance awards for last year were given to Donna Kingdon, Mary Hunter and Linda Worley of Xi Gamma Rho as. well as Diane Welychko of Alpha Phi. New forests growing on damaged lands New young forests are now growing on one quarter of the prov ince's forest land previously classed as backlog ‘Not Satisfactorily Re- stocked’ (NSR), the Ministry of For: ests has announced. “This achievement is mainly due to the federal-provincial Forest Re source Development Agreement (FRDA),” Forests Minister Dave Parker said in a news release. The minister made the statement in releasing new statistics, produced by the Ministry of Forests, on back log (NSR) lands. The NSR backlog on good and medium forest sites has been re- duced to 553,000 hectares from 738,000 hectares. Parker credited much of this ad vance to work done over the last Peace party Dec. 11 The May Day Social Club invites the community to its annual Peace on Earth Christmas Party on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Community Complex in Castlegar. This year the traditional potluck dinner will be served around 4:30 p.m. The doors open after 3 p.m. to allow time to decorate the Christmas tree and get into the Christmas spirit. After dinner, Santa will call with gifts of oranges and candy canes for the children. J Ham and turkey are included in a low admission charge at the door. three years under the five-year, $300-million agreement. “FRDA is an important addition to our regular reforestation programs which, by law, now ensure that re- cently harvested areas are refor- ested promptly,” the minister said. The minister said reforestation ac tivities will continue during the re. maining two years of FRDA, but more agreements are required to LETTERS help eliminate ail the backlog. “I would like to see the remaining 553,000 hectares of backlog NSR eliminated by the year 2000,” he said. Parker said silviculture surveys were carried out between May 1985 and September 1988 on more than 270,000 hectares of backlog NSR land to determine the level of forest land stocking. In addition, more than 69,000 hectares of backlog NSR lands were replanted Community feeling flows one way As a long-time resident of Castle. gar, I was appalled at Patti Richards’ statement about the ferry in the Castlegar News. I only wish she had made public her attitude towards the ferry issue before the municipal elections. Had she, it may have been eye opening just how strongly many of us feel about the loss of the ferry. To so flippantly toss aside an issue of such emotional magnitude to so many reveals an attitude of misun derstanding and disrespect I certainly hope this attitude is not echoed by others who are elected to serve. Letters to Santa are serious business. Last year, 30,000 children in British Columbia and the Yukon sent letters to the North Pole, Canada Post spokesman Linsey Keats said. In Vancouver, up to 300 post office volunteers made it their business to answer those letters. “We have everyone from directors to clerks helping,” Keats said. Employees are instructed not to make specific promises and to em phasize the spirit of Christmas of letters expected in the next few weeks. “I think it’s a good way of seeing Christmas through a child's eyes,” said Kubbernus, a payroll training officer. “We tend to get caught up in the dollar value of Christmas as adults. “There are some priceless letters.” The grandmother answered more than 100 letters last year — “not nearly as many as a lot of other people.” She has received some odd re- quests this year. One little girl asked for “a nectarine to fall out of my stocking, just like last year.” Another youthful scribe asked Santa to provide her mother's boy. friend with a key to their apartment. A set of twins wrote pleading their innocence. “I eat slowly, I don’t write on the walls and I put my blocks away,” one testified. His twin pled. ged: “I don't beat my brother any. more and I don't splash too much in the bath.” “One boy wrote and thanked me for the Ferrari I got him last Christmas,” Kubernus said. “I hope it was a toy.” Youngsters contemplating writing the jolly old gent should remember to include their return addresses, Keats said. In the past, many letters to Santa have gone unanswered for lack of a return address.
