8B CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, rye 24,1977 Home Away from Home Parents of the physically * disabled all across the province Pulpit and By Pastor DONALD W. REED Pew I sometimes think that a lot of parents must be terribly confused or else incredibly naive. In thinking that three hours at a movie is harmless for the child, but that two hours of Sunday School and church are too much for his nervous system seems to me like fuzzy thinking. Giving him a quarter for the collection and a dollar for the movies shows a parent's sense of values and is not likely to produce a proportionate giver. Letting him listen to sever- al hours of radio and/or view several hours of television a day with no time for a short prayer and a few Bible verses is criminal unbalance. Being careful that Junior day eshoot and caring not that he knows his Sunday School les- sons makes for spiritual illiter- acy. Saying that a child must make his own decisions as to whether or not he should go to church is shirking a parental responsibility. The late J. Edgar Hoover had something significant to say on that last point. “Shall I make my child go to Sunday Schoo! and church? Yest And without further discussion a- bout the matter. Startled? Why? How do you answer Junior when he comes to breakfast on Monday morning and announces te you that he is not going to school anymore? You know! Junior goes. How do you answer when Junior comes in very much besmudged and says, “I'm not going to take a bath.” Junior bathes, doesn't he? “Why all this timidity, then, in the realm of his spiritual guidance and growth? Going to let him wait and decide what church he'll go to when he's old enough? Quit your kidding! You didn't wait until you were old enough. You don’t wait until he’s old enough to decide whether he wants to go ‘to school or: not—to start his education. You don't wait until he's old enough to decide whether he wishes, to be clear. or dirty, do you? Do you wait until he's old enough to decide if he wants to take his medicine when he is sick? Do you?” Why Jo so many parents get hung up in this area of religion? Is it because they are so vulnerable in that area themselyes? Could it be that they don’t want the children to get involved because they're not willing to get involved themselves? T suggest that the assets of religious activity in the home and in the church far outweigh the liabilities. Nothing else I know of contributes so strongly to the solidarity of the family, And what's more, there's a life after this life, and it might be wise planning to look ahead... for the sake of the kids, and just maybe for the sake of mom and dad too. from the Slocan Valley: to Skeona Country, from Tasu in the Charlottes and Faro in the Yukon, must occasionally fly into Vancouver with thelr crippled child for diagnosis and treatment, Vancouver can be a lonely and frightening city if you area stranger, especially if you are | trying to find suitable ac- commodation near Vancouver General Hospital. Easter Seal House is just half a block away at 625 West Twelfth. This home-away-from- home for disabled youngsters is in the heart of town, near city hall, stores and restaurants, The welcome mat is always out. Parents and children alike know they are among friends as soon as they cross the thres- hold! There are five light house- keeping suites. The rate is just $3.a night for child and parent. You contribution to the Lions Easter Seal Campaign is. what makes the price right. . UC Minister Says. Image Unfortunate A United Church minister in Toronto says it is unfor- tunate that the mention of the word evangelicalism conjures up pictures of a perspiring’ preacher feverishly addressing . a crowd in a tent or a hockey arenas - “I think that every person is in search of a God in whom they can believe,” said Rev. J. Berkley Reynolds in a recent: interview. “He said evangelicalism “is therefore the good news that you need search no longer for God, in Jesus Christ, has been made real.” Mr. Reynolds, said church- es and ministers can easily become, so preoccupied with ‘services and programs that they forget that their mission is, to“communicate the good news to others”, Part-Time oe * Parsons Uséd - In Britain Britein'a hard-hit aronomy. has produced a new type of professional—part-time par- sons. They earn their salary as community or welfare workers and, in return for. their part- time chureh ministry, they are given a rent-free vicarage. “We pay for the bed; they - provide the breakfast,” said a Church of England official. Rev. David Wardrop is an example. During the day he is secretary to the North Bed- fordshire community health council. We have been told that scarcity Is the resull of over-population. and. that only by stopping popula- lion growth can we begin to eliminate hunger. However, such a simplistic approach does not deal with the realities of the food situation, For example, why is it that, if high population density: is necessarily related to hunger, the nations of Europe, with some of the highest population densities in the world, are amongst the best fed? Japan is likewise amongst the . ‘best nourished nations, despite its large population. The fact is that the pro- blems of food shortages are relaled, not simply to over- population, but rather to the way in which food is organized and controlled, « For example, when pro- ducers in developing countries are pressured by large corpora- : tions to switch from local needs - the basic pension and supplement will provide a pay- ‘ment of $465. 62 for the couple ‘monthly.
