Dexter MacRae had many more
students to place in paid positions than
ever before.

His search for suitable employment
opportunities for students in the three
co-op education disciplines began last
fall. Assisting him were faculty from
tl i d business programs.

“Considering that converting the
business program to a co-operative
education format added almost twice
the number of stiidents, we managed
to. do quite well in finding enough
relevant, paid employment to go
around,’’ MacRae said in a news
release.

For many students enrolled in these
programs, co-op work term positions
are the first ‘‘real’’ jobs in the
profession of their ¢haice. Many
students use the three work terms that
make up the full year of cooperative
work experience to try out different
aspects-of work within their chosen
field.

Paula Franz of Castlegar, a second-
year CIST student, began her final

work term this month with Health and,

‘Welfaré Canada in Vancouver. She
has worked for Corporate Personnel
Recruiters of Vancouver, an ¢m-
ployment placement service, as well as
for the Ministry of Forests in Victoria.
In each capacity Franz experiences a

mainly data entry, but since I was the
most conversant of anyone in the of-
fice with computer systems, | ended up
training new staff, maintaining the
system, making back-ups of the work
and performing clerical duties as
well.”

Prior to enrolling in the coniputer
information systems program, she had
a background in social work and had
never before operated acomputer.

Franz’s next posting-was- with the
Ministry of Forests, Inventory Branch,
in Victoria where she found herself
working on a large mainframe com-
puter system that supported .IBM,
Wang, and DEC/VAX terminals.
There her duties consisted of perfor-
ming statistical analyses of the provin-
ce’s timber supply.

She’s looking forward to the next
four-month work term with Health
and Welfare-Canada, where she will
again be working with microcom-
puters, but this time networked as part
of anation-wide system.

“‘L will be evaluating software and
recommending suitable programs that
will meet the department’s needs," she
said. *‘l think this position involves
teaching others how to use the net-
worked system, and I understand | will
be programming data base macros and
doing some Word Perfect macro

placements already this year, MacRae
is confident that most students who
want a co-opefative education work
experience will get one. He said that
flexibility is required by students to en-
sure their success at landing a job.

“Ht’s just not possible to place alt of
our qualified students locally,’
MacRae said. ‘They must be prepared
to re-locate for the fouremonth work
placements if they want to remain:in a
competitive position for the better
jobs.””

This month, as co-op students begin
their work terms, many will stay in the
area, working for such employers as
Cominco, KDS Engineering of
Castlegar, S. K. Electronics of Nelson,
the Ministry of Forests in Nelson,
Kootenay Tractor in Nelson, West
Kootenay Power, Exner and Dietrich
Chartered Accountants of Nelson,
Berg and Naqvi Chartered Accountan-
ts of Nelson, Beaver Valley Electroriics
of Fruitvale, and Can Par Industries of
Grand Forks.

While the. employment oppor-
tunities are cultivated by the college's

view and selection process that is stric-
tly between the students and em-
ployers, the college says. In preparing
for this crucial phase of the co-
operative education experience,
students undergo a series of exercises
in job readiness.
