As Canadians, we know all too much about taxes. But how much do we know about death? And how much do we know about a world-wide organization that helps families and friends deal with the loss of a loved one? Not enough, according to the Castlegar Hospice Society’s vice president Lovette Nichvolodoff. Nichvolodoff is one of 75 local hospice workers that help to put death into perspective. After all, death is the final stage of life. How people deal with that final stage is where the Castlegar Hospice Society steps in. “Hospice is an organization that would support and provide volunteers for families and individuals that are experiencing death or are grieving the loss of a loved one,” Nichvolodoff said. Hospice is an ancient term describing a place of shelter for weary travellers. Today, that word has been redefined to describe a co- ordinated program of skilled palliative and supportive services for the terminally ill, their family and friends. The first known hospice program was erected by Cecily Saunders at St. Christopher’s Hospital in London. Little did Saunders know her tiny in-church program would spread across the world. “There is a real need for us,” Nichvolodoff said. “We are willing to News photo by Scott David Harrison The Castlegar Hospice Society's Katherine Kalmakoff adds another name to the Celebrate a Life tree as the local support group kicks off it's Christmas fundraiser. help any family that contacts us. Getting through the grieving process is a very important step.” Bringing the subject of dying out of the shadows is something Nichvolodoff says people must do. “I have no fear at all about death,” she said. “I think there’s a time in life when you just accept it. And then you look on it as a transition from one phase of living into another phase.” “Sitting with a dying person is not the only thing we do,” Nichvolodoff said. “We are a lot more than that.” A lot more, indeed. In addition to providing a fresh ear for terminally ill and dying patients, hospice volunteers will provide transportation to and from appointments, support for family members, write letters and offer companionship. donation. Also, every light comes with small card which will be placed on the tree in memory of lost loved ones. Donations can be made up to Dec. 31. “The tree has a lot of meaning to it, especially at this time of year,” Nichvolodoff said. “It’s a very touching, sensitive time of year and people tend to miss family members that they have lost. “The tree gives them a chance to ‘Sitting with a dying person is not the only thing we do. We are a lot more than that.’ — Hospice’s Lovette Nichvolodoff r ber that person through the lights.” The funds raised through the Celebrate a Life go towards a number of things, including Nichvolodoff says death has become a silent subject because people“are afraid of the unknown.” Afraid or not, death is inevitable. So, too, is coming to terms with a fallen friend or family member. The Castlegar Hospice Society has 57 trained volunteers willing and able to help families through difficult times. They are all just one phone call away. “I think it is a great organization,” Nichvolodoff said. The Castlegar Hospice Society is currently holding its third annual Celebrate a Life fundraiser. The fundraiser gives individuals an opportunity to remember deceased family members or friends by turning 6n a Christmas tree light. One Christmas light is turned on every time the hospice gets a training programs. In addition, the funds from this year’s Celebrate a Life will go to help furnish a family room at the Castlegar and District Hospital. The room will allow families and friends to be closer to their loved ones in the final moments of life. “This is so important,” Nichvolodoff said of the family room. “It’s one way that we can help people, which is what we are all about.”
