Cap was born in Cape John, in Pictou County Nova Scotia, on Christmas Eve of 1890. He moved to Nelson in 1908 and came to the Arrow Lakes to start work on the tug ‘Irene’ in 1915. In 1919, he married Mani on Sanderson, daughter of Cap- tain Robert Sanderson, an earlier pioneer Lakes tug-boat captain, and obtained his own captain's papers to operate boats on the Arrow Lake He commanded the tug “Yale’ for six years and then went to work for William Waldie and Sons Lumber Com pany in 1931. He also com manded the tugs, Elcoe | and Elcoe I for the next thirty years When the company was sold to Celgar, the Elcoe Il w: but Cap stayed on ip_an adviso- ry capacity, and as the skipper of the survey ship, Alice-Lynn. When he retired at the age of 70, he received a commendation from T.N. No one reflected the life and people of this com munity better than Cap, and no one knew the waters over which the new bridge will cross better than him.
