1:1 ~ . EPP-]ALK I have a problem. Maybe someone can help me. Some years ago I read an article in a golf magazine by a writer from somewhere in the northern states. He visited the Upper Course and was shown the old log building that sits in the bush just off No. 9 green. Being a writer, he did some research and came up with some su~ posed facts which he incorporated into his story about our fabled old course. He had been told it was the first headquarters of the Mounted Police when they were posted to the - area while the famous Dewdney Trail was being forged. Recently on a visit to the course for nine holes with Bart Dudley and Carl Osing, we decided to take a look at the old building, despite the fact it is in a rather sad state of disrepair.Thebuilding,on the whole, seems perfecUy sound. I came back to town and that night attended a combined Lions and Rotary meeting. I thought it would be a good time to bring up the subject of getting the service clubs to · back a try for heritage classification for the old building. Since that time I have talked to several people in my quest for more · information. All those I brought the subject up to thought the idea merited recognition. History was not too plentiful. Staff-Sgt. Huska, of the Trail detachment, suggested contacting Fort Steele near Cranbrook to shed some light on the subject while Jack McDonald of the museum suggested contacting the RCMP archives in Regina. He also said he understood it was originally built as a sort of half-way house adjacent to the Dewdney Trail and later taken over by the Mounties as a headquarters building for the area. So, if anyone can shed more light on this fascinating old building with regard to its past, it would be nice to have something really substantial to go along with any future preentation to the heritage people. The Rossland Eagles Aerie No. 10 are a busy bunch of people since moving into their new headquarters on the main street. Besides working on the renovation of their new building they are keeping a full calendar of events. Mother's Day Breakfast was held May 13 with a good response. Pin night will be held May 22, featuring cocktails, supper and a regular meeting with the provincial president, Doug Brice, in attendance. May 26 will be installation night with a ·social evening and dance to follow. The extension to the rear of the building will begin in June and any available help will be appreciated. It is also noted the annual 1¥illl Harry Pepper 11/if!?/P~ picnic will be held June 17. Possibly the site could be the Lions Trailer Park which now has admirable facilities for this sort of function. The Legion Darts club is moving to get their club on a solid footing and toward this end they will sponsor a mixed doubles tournament to be held in the branch on June 16. Team members must be over 50 and the entry fee is $5 per person. Since returning from the trip to the coast the team members, who form the nucleus of what is proving to be a pretty well-run club, have been implementing a number of ideas they picked up while at the provincial championships. Let's not forget that Legion golf tourney on June 2 at Salmo. Let's give the enterprising branch at Salmo a real boost for this zone event and let's hope for a nice day. I hate the rain, don't you? Most of my readers around Rossland will remember a wee little guy that wore the colors of the Rossland Warriors some years back. Tommy Stanton was a real battler who revelled in the rough going and played every game as though it was for the Stanley Cup. Some of you might be interested to know what Tommy is doing today. Well, he has a job up in Golden, with the Forestry, I think. Anyways, he also has a hobby. He writes one of the most entertaining newspaper columns that you would want to read. Visiting his family down on Cook Avenue last Sunday, I got a chance to read his latest offering. It was a dandy. Tommy adds just enough of the old humor to his writing to make it real good reading and also finishes up with, "Til next week, then I" P.S.: Let's try that Retiree Golf next Tuesday, the weatherman willing, 8 a.m.,OK?
