Different environments, different altuations, yet they all traveled down the same lonely road-and fought the same losing battle against alcohol, their pasts littered with broken promises to employers, loved ones and themselves. Only when they turned to Alcoholics Anonymous, 6 1,000,000 others, were these individuals able to get sober and stay sober. Formed in 1985 by two desperate men, Alcoholics Anonymous is an informal movement whose members meet at regular intervals in nearly 28,000 groups in about 92 countries throughout the world. ? AA is described as “a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only require- ment for membership is a desire to stop drinking.” How did the executive, the housewife and the con- struction foreman come to AA? The executive was re- ferred to AA by a doctor who suggested he might be an and sai i / Wedding Bells Wed in Kelowna A wedding of interest in Castlegar was fe dJuly 14 at Church in Kelowna, BC. ee Thomas Gerard Anderson of Castlegar took as his bride, Deena Ann Favali of Kelowna, The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Favali of Kelowna and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Oliver Anderson of Castlegar. Father McCarthy conducted the morn- ing ceremony, in which the bride was given in marriage by her father. Her floor-length . gown was fashioned in cream cotton, with lace insets in the sleeves, lace front panel and wine and rose tapestry waistband. She wore a wine rose in her hair and carried a bouquet . of silk cream and wine roses. A pleasing complement to the bride were her attendants, dressed in full-skirted gowns of dusky rose with cream lace trim, full elbow-length sleeves and laced bodices. Pink and white carnations formed their bouquets and each attendant wore pink flowers in her hair. Maid of honor was Tamara Coppen of Kelowna, while’ bridesmaids were Pamela i and Therese And a sister the groom. Completing the wedding party were best man Mr. Jim McGauley and ushers, Mr. John Radal, the bride's brother-in-law from Ladysmith, and Mr. Jack Swetlishoff of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gerard Anderson The Parish Centre in Kelowna featured the pink and white wedding color theme for the reception. Mr. Chuck Caputo of Kelowna was master of ceremonies, and read congratulatory telegrams from B.C. points, Montreal and Winnipeg. The toast to the might be the cause of. his “nervous tension,” rather than the cure. The doctor mentioned that al- coholism, in the light of present medical knowledge, is an incurable disease that gets progressively worse un- til it results in insanity or death. While there is rlo cure, the ravages of the disease ean be arrested by living without alcohol. A spiritual adviser dir- ected the housewife to AA. He told her that alcoholism was not a sign of weak character, although it did lead to deterioration of -the spirit, mind and body. Al, the construction fore- man, resisted similar advice, not only from medical men and the clergy, but from friends, employers, and fam- ily. He was determined to. control his drinking without help from others. It was not until he woke up in a third-rate hotel after a week- long binge that he realized he © was beaten and he called AA. Two members came to see him. They were sympa- thetic, yet matter-of-fact. Women's Aglow Fellow- ship held its first meeting of the season at the Hi Arrow Arms Motor Hotel on Wed- nesday of last week, with many new faces prevalent in the large crowd. After praise and wor- ship, Joanne Pepper gave her testimony. In her early years, Miss Pepper felt that Christ was a part of her life, but it was not until her carly teens, when she committed herself to serving the Lord in mission- ary work, that she knew that Jesus was her whole life. The Lord has been faithful in meeting her every need, keeping her safe, healthy, home in Victoria. She will be attending Fuller Graduate School in Pasadena, Calif., this fall. Martha DaRosa, of Col- ville, Wash, who accom- panied the guest speaker, Eddie Sevy, also of Colville, ministered in singing, “I Will Serve Him Because I Love Him.” Sevy then went on to heal participants with her medicine, “A merry heart doeth good like a med- icine..." Prov. 17:22. Her sense of humor was sprinkled throughout her sharing with the ladies how the Lord had changed her dull life as a housewife into’ that of a beautiful “home engineer.” The Women's Aglow Fellowship National Conven- tion will be held in Toronto this year from Sept. 24 to 27. ‘The next meeting will be at the Hi Arrow Arms on Oct. 10 with guest speaker Joan James. how they had found sobriety 4 through AA. Three speakers summar- fed their drinking experi: ences and told how they used the AA program to maintain sobriety. The interpretation and procedure might be different, but the results were the same. Each indl- vidual! had found his or her own way to sobriety within - the framework of AA. ° As the meeting closed with the Lord's Prayer, most joined in, but a few were silent. They may have been agnostics, or those, like Al, who had not yet had time to faith. No matter, drinking for 10 minutes, and then for another 10 minutes through the day.
