(CP) Snjugglers trying to sneak contraband across the border near this small community have’more to contend with than the‘ U.S. customs and the border patrol. They also have to watch out for Juanita McGee and Bradley the St. Bernard. McGee and her canine companion are unofficial guardians of a small piece of the Canada-U.S. border. An amateur sleuth, McGee has blown the whistle on many a crooks. and Trail met in Trail Re- gional Hospital boardroom to hear Dr, McMurray speak on laboratory monitoring o! of can- Gor patients: ~~ cen ati 's_ suburbs leer: further south every day, more and more people — the woods. A few hours later, the youths showed up from the Canadian side of the border to claim their stash and were quickly nabbed. McGee ‘and her husband have lived a few metres south of the border for seven years, “We've caught smugglers trying to sneak all sorts of things across the border; dope, drink, fancy car parts, just everything," McGee says. George Tranberg — who is with the U.S. border patrol in Blaine — says the patrol gets a considerable amount of help from border residents like ; McGee. g Dr. N lecture, the members of the academy elected a new ex- ecutive council for (1982. A report from the core- committee for the BCSMT congress to be held in Castle: gar in September, 1983 was given by core committee sec- retary, Linda Stanley. Things are well underway in the planning of this proviny cial convention. Dr: McMurray discussed : the many areas in which the laboratory aids in the ‘de- tection of malignant disease, the determination of the ex- tent of this disease, and the monitoring of the treatment used in fighting’ these mal- ignant diseases. The Kootenay Academy of the BCSMT will meet again June 10 in Castlegar. (submitted by Linda Dower) McDonald arch smugglers, line-jumpers and police ambushes. For McGee, life on the line means ‘catching crooks.. Her biggest triumph came two years ago, when she helped nab a pair of young drug smugglers, It was broad daylight when she looked out her living room window and noticed the pair acting in a strange manner. After driving to the erd of the road near McGee's juse, they jumped out of their car, threw something across the ditch that marks the Canada-U.S. boundary an} drove away. SEARCHED WOODS McGee set off to search the nearby woods with Bradley at her side, “It took us a while, but eventually I found this small cellophane package in the grass. I called the border patrol and when they came they told me it was 17 lids (ounces) of marijuana.” The border patrol hid in SIALWAYS WATCHING *Tranberg says the U.S. le border patrol watches over its side of the line 24 hours a day, although the intensity of the patrols is constantly changing. The officers have four- wheel drives and aircraft to patrol the more remote areas. They also have heat sensors which are set up at varying spots along the bor- der to monitor any. illegal traffic. If a person steps across the line the sensors will pick them up and alert the border patrol. Transberg says 1,017 “il- legal aliens” were caught in the Blaine sector last year for failing to report at border crossings. About 30 of ‘those were charged. "ft depends on the situ- ation of course,” Tranberg says. “But mostly we just point them north and tell them please don’t do it again.” In B.C., the patrols aren't nearly as intensive. The duty is mostly held by the various local detachments of the RCMP, which handle it as part of their regular highway patrols, The border watch is mainly the responsibility of Canada Customs, which has 14 bor- der crossings from the U.S. into B.C, Graham Toomey, opera- tions manager at the Douglas crossing, says about 1,000 seizures were made ‘at the five Vancouver area stations last year. But only the more serious offenders, usually those smuggling narcotics, were charged. The others are generally let off with warn-* ings. $425,000 awarded for loss of hair MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island woman who said she lost her hair from the shock of biting into a squirm- ing beetle while eating yo- gurt has been awarded $425,000. Arlene Zuckerman, 24, a bookkeeper, was eating rasp- berry yogurt Jan. 6, 1975, while watching television when she “felt a piece of foreign matter in her mouth,” according to court papers. “She knew it was too hard to be a raspberry, and be- sides it was moving,” said her lawyer, Abraham Fuchsberg. Zuckerman ‘'gasped, shrieked and vomited” when she discovered the moving black bug. Zuckerman, who said she was forced to wear a wi; because of her shedding hair, sued Dannon Co. of Long Island City, N.Y., for: $500,000. The traditional red-and- white plastic trademark that dots the country’s landscape has been replaced by muted beige stucco on the outside of its stylish fast-food restaur- ant here. That was only one of the concessions franchise owner Marvin Chanin made ‘to the genteel sensibilities of city fathers in this well-to-do des- ert community. A French interior designer Le Sopha Group of Paris, put together the concept for the atore: pink neon scenes of dosort life on the walls, blue tile on the floor, a moder- nistic white-tile trapezoidal partition with a square win- dow separating the rooms, and a five-metro-wide water- fall flowing down one wall. What about tho food at the $500,000 food emporium? — It tastea the samo as any other McDonald's, but a hamburger costs soven per cont more than it would in downtown Los Angeles. APPOINTMENTS ANYTIME.
