Red Cross offers boating tips Brushing up on rules helps avoid accidents, consultant says If people drove cars as rarely as some of them operate boats, the rate of accidents on our highways would likely be much higher, says the consultant for the Red Cross Water Safety Ser- “People who boat only occa- sionally are often unaccustomed to boating and of safe boaters should ensure all equip- ment is working and that life- jackets, personal floatation devices, and any necessary sur- vival or emergency gear is on board. In many cases, a year or more has passed since their pre- vious outing. “A lot of people treat boats like they do a car, and just jump in,” Broome says. “But even if you just go out for five minutes, on can go wrong.” da of do's 4 Grade 8 First Class Honors — C VIOLIN Grade 6 Honors — Tiffany Hampton Western Economic _ Diversification Canada diversify the western Canadian economy. What's the Big Idea? Western Economic Diversification Canada is a federal department that is working with business to The Western Diversification gram: Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) provides interest-free financing to help western businesses develop their big ideas: new products, new markets, new technologies, import replacements and industry- wide productivity improvements. If the weather is unfavorable, don’t take the risk. Also make sure someone who stays behind knows where you are bound an dwhen you will return. * Passengers should also familiarize themselves with how to run the boat in case some- thing happens to the operator. While on the water keep an eye open for swimmers and for float- ing objects that could damage the boat. * Don’t rock the boat. Avoid moving around, but if you need to, then keep your centre of gravity low by squatting. Balance the weight on the boat as you move. Never stand up to start the engine on a small power boat as the sudden jolt can hurl you into the water. * Should the boat be dam- aged or tip over, stay with the boat. Try to get on top of it rather than attempting to swim to shore. People often misjudge their endurance and swimming abili- ties and it’s much easier for res- cuers to see an upturned boat than it is to spot a head bobbing in the water. “By brushing up on and fol- lowing basic rules of boating even casual boaters can avoid most accidents or be prepared if something unexpected hap- pens,” said Broome.
