The largest part .of this produce is’ always some kind of surplus, or some crop not suf- ficiently large to be marketed wholesale, or else the opportunity is lacking-.at the right moment. These Published Every ‘Thursday By ARG e G, CLASSEN, Editor $8.00 per year; 25¢ per month by carrier. ROADSIDE STANDS no doubt sold wholesale by the farmers. But there is “bits dnd pieces’ are marketed in an. improvised, hap- hazard way by word of mouth or door-to-door sales, among the non-farming. population. | And yet there is a, ready-made, modern method - of marketing such produce: the roadside stand, Never before has the small, gaily painted counter “by the highway enjoyed such spectacular. popularity. as this summer. One has only to drive through the Okanagan . to see the truth of this borne out.. And a refreshment stand which opened not long ago.on Highway No. 3 is doing a very brisk business indeed. But not a single stand offering fruits and vege- tables has been seen in the district ‘this summer, and - we can only puzzle and shake. our heads at these lost opportunities. FARMS NEED LABOR ‘ In recent years the farm labor situation in Can- / ada has become progressively more acute annually. The agricultural labor force in Canada in 1956 shows a reduction of some 100,000 since 1953, and is ap- proximately: the same as it’ was in 1900, This re- sults in part from mechanization of agriculture: The industrial development. in British Columbia is, however, very. definitely adversely affecting. the farm labor supply. Higher wages and improved work- ing conditions in industries other than~ agriculture attract the best workers. The position of: agriculture in the labor market is likely to become even rhore acute as. construction and other industrial projects increase their man power requirements. A report from the: National Employment Service shows only 995 farm placements to June 30th of this year compared, to 4,955 for the same period in 1955—a tremendous reduction of 4,000. While dif- fieulty in obtaining help and further “mechanization contributed to this decline,.it was the result largely of a.drastically reduced demand for workers on straw- berry and ‘raspberry farms in the Frazer: Valley.. The figure reflects the very heavy loss in pr luction caused by the abnormally heavy frosts last winter, and graphically portrays the very serious blow to. the. farm economy of the Province. A survey of farm labor conditions in the Province just completed: by the British Columbia Department of Agriculture reveals a shortage of permanent farm help on dairy farms, nurseries,’ greenhouses, ‘poultry farms, and: other agricultural enterprises. In order to harvest the. -crops this year {particu- larly the apple crop) -it appt it- Will be necessary - forall local ‘communities in the- Okanagan to organize the help locally. 17 is imperative the : local organiza- - tions such as Boards of: Trade, etc. co-operate’ fully with officials. of. the National Employment Service and of the’ Federal: Provincial Farm Labor ‘Service: (Federal- Preyinclal Farm Labor 'Service) ) CYRIL T. Farms diminish ‘in: number year after year, however, and with them the farm population. And this, in turn, brings with it a phenomenon over which the sociologists have been shaking their. heads for a good number of years: the great increase in credit and instalment buying.” There is a definite’ and logi- cal connection here, and the de- termining factor can be. summed up in’:the word - - “inheritance”. A job, to most. women: to- day, not only provides a stimu- lus but also satisfies a .deep- rooted urge for equality which housework does not: Most signi- ficant, perhaps, of all, is the fact that in a home where the moth- er works, the family do things together, each one shares alike, no one sits back waiting for the other fellow. _ Work is shared and pleasur- es are shared, and speaking of my own particular family no ‘one ‘has either been neglected nor, feels neglected, and one is and of the: of their in the case of family. farms, these were usually quite considerable large enough to provide the young people with a solid basis for further expansion. ° This was: true not only -of farms but also: ‘of the family business, and up.to the. middle of the ‘last. century. -most. busi- nesses _ were confined to one family.
