REED Uncle Mose offers this word of wisdom as we set up for this week's column. “W'en a man git too busy fo’ God, he too busy.” And quite a few pages over, he has this bit of wit: “Day got ole Simpson to chu'ch at las’ — daid! There's room for’ a ‘lot “of* thought between those two statements. Maybe the sharp- eyed janitor down at the First Church of Littletown can help to set the wheels in motion. Just in case you missed last week's column, we intro- duced our readers there to one of our favorite story-book char- acters, Uncle Mose, As the ereator of Uncle Mose says, " “from the pastor's study out to the extremities of the parish he knows exactly what is, no matter what it looks like, and expresses it in a manner which enables him to avoid a ‘bop’ on the nose.” So, perk up your ears again and listen to some sage sayings of this delightful character from Littletown. You may conclude as I do that there is more wisdom than wit ‘ This one must be especially for my colleagues and me: “Pahson put down all he dates in he notebook so he won’ fo'gits 'em, but seem lake he allus fo'git to look at ‘he notebook.” And here's one that pretty “Accurately describes a lot of folk I've met through the years—Same: of whom ° just happen to live in Castlegar: “Dey's some on de broad way, and’ some on de nar-way, but de bigges’ problems .id dem da't tryin’ to trabbel bo’f ways at de same time.” Does this one remind you of some church business meet- ings you have attended? . “Wren de chu'ch vote de way Sist’ Jinny want ‘em to, she say dat de Lawd’s will wuz done; but ef day votes de odder way, she say dey wuz some . railroadin’ done.” Our congenial friend has this to say about the devil: ‘Ole Satan, he purty good—good ‘nough to fool a lot uv peoples dat think dey’s mighty smaht.” And this: “Ef you holdin’ de Lawd wid one han’ an’ de debil wid de odder, you ain’ gittin’ no place, ‘cause dey ain’ goin’ de same way.” And here's another: “Dey cain’ nobody keep de debil frum knockin’ at de so’, but what gits peoples into trouble is standin’ a chattin’..wid. ‘im pleasant ike.” Maybe this is about the shortest sermon you ever heard, but it sure packs a punch: “Ain’ no use talkin’ to de Lawd ef you ain’ speakin’ to yo’ neighbor.” And just to show you that I can be fair, I'll finish -this column about where I started it. The direction of these final capsules is obvious. “It funny to watch pahson shakin’ han's at de do’. He don’ know whut he sayin’ an’ de peoples. don't’ know who he sayin’ em to." And just for good measure, TI throw this one in too: “Pahson say .dat sense he seketary took down one o' his sarmons in sh'hand, he know now w’y fo'ks don’ pay no mo’ ‘tention to whut he say. ! church directory ST. The owner, Casban Holdings Ltd., has sold the lot to Golden Arrow Investments Ltd., which plans to locate a business complex on the property. Harry's problem since then has been finding ‘a place to relocate his family and his workshop,” ‘There are no such places in the city available for rental. Not that Harry lacks other options. They include Nakusp, to which he has been informally invited by a member of the village Chamber of Commerce, and Enderby, north of Vernon. But he doesn't particularly want to go to Enderby or Nakusp. For one thing, relocation ih of logging boots,’ which require more time and “energy than the semi-retired Harry {s able to |. Morin’s Tact mased oo a Cal hear -Separatism’ s Architect- provide. For another, Enderby dwellers’ foot- |’. ; wear consists of “nothing but cowboy boots," according to Harry. As well, Harry has roots in Castlegar, His wife Mary was born here.. He has: lived in Castlegar 17 years, and repaired shoes for the last nine. Although he is able to work only two to three hours daily, he adheres to a certain work ethic, “I may as well die working,” Harry says. “It's better than sitting at the window or fi fighting with the wife.”, We're not about to lecture anyone on shoe ropair as a dying art. Neither will we rant on about a throwaway society. which has forgotten the value of a recycled pair of brogues, But we do think it is unfortunate someone who has for so many years belonged in the Nakusp would mean the repair and should suddenly find himself. without a place in it, Don’t Lose Your Temper The Castlegar district's annual Sunflower - Fest celebration takes place this weekend, and this editorial is the result of-a suggestion made to us just a year ago. Following the conclusion of last: year’s hly three-day a con: stant reader suggested we write an editorial commenting upon the thousands of hours of volunteer effort ‘put into. Sunflower Fest by various individuals and service club members. We agreed the idea was a good one, but suggested the editorial should wait until just before this year's Sunflower Fest. In this way it | would serve'as a reminder to those attending the celebration that the people selling hot dogs, organizing ball tournaments, helping out in beer gardens, running the frog jumping ‘contest, sponsoring the.log burling, marshalling the parade, flipping pancakes, driving vintage pa helping with : the hi ‘Soif you have to walt longer than you think you should for a hamburger, or if some event doesn't start at the exact minute it was advertised for, don't lose your temper.
