Robinson, who was born in Yorkshire and emigrated to Canada in 1974, says he has long been fascinated by the survivors of attacks by serial killers — the ‘tones who got away’’ — and about whom little is known or written. Although he did not interview any survivors, he researched accounts of the actions of such serial killers as Peter Sutcliffe, the so-called Yorkshire Ripper. Some of Sutcliffe’s victims did survive his attacks. In seeking a locale for his book, Robinson says he picked Whitby because of its links to history and mystery.
