The change comes with the Rebels mired in a nine-game losing streak and in last place in the KIJHL's West Division with an 8-19-0 record. But Rilcof said hiring Walker FRESH SQUEEZED AUSSIE - * & News photo by Ed Mills SHSS senior girls basketball players Rory Perrier (left) and Laurel Closkey put the squeeze play on a mem- ber of an Australian girls team at SHSS Thursday. The Aussie contingent was made up of three teams that played here as part of a tour through the Western U.S. and Canada. was no reflection on the abilities of Koorbatoff and Fauth, who were winless in five games since taking over from Cheveldave. Rilcof said they will remain with the club as assistants, but their exact roles hadn’t been ‘ defined Thursday. Walker, 26, said he took the job for the players’ sake. “It’s the kids that are getting hurt now and nobody else but the kids. I’d like to go out and try to help them. To go through a year like they’ve already went through is not really fair to them,” he said. Walker, who retired from professional hockey prior to the start of this season, said it’s anew season for every Rebels player as soon as he steps in the door. “I’m going to go in there and give every kid on the team a new start. And I hope the fans will do the same. “Every. (team) makes the playoffs and we're going to be working for that. I’ve got a month to turn them around so we have a chance to maybe go somewhere in the playoffs.” Walker said. “I think it’s a great move,” said Rebels’ defenceman Bill Brewer. “He’s a smart guy, he knows what he’s talking about and he knows what a winning team needs,” Brewer said. Rilcof said although Walker hasn’t committed to coach the team next season, the club took a “calculated risk” that he'll be back. Walker said he’s not even thinking of next season yet. Walker played stints with the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings, but spent most of his six-year pro career in the minors and Europe. Upon retiring, Walker returned to live in Castlegar with his wife and two children. The Rebels approached Walker right after Cheveldave quit, but he refused the job because of prior obligation as an assistant coach with the Castlegar Bantam Rep team. Walker said he will continue to help out the Bantams as time permits. Walker made his _ coaching debut at the Community Complex Friday-when the Rebels played the Spokane Braves.
