Since then there has been a staggering $144 million raised in Fox's name for innovative cancer research—a record $900,000 was raised in B.C. last year alone Fox's dream began in 1979 after his right leg was amputated six inches above the knee two years earlier due to cancer. On Oct. 15, 1979 Fox enlisted the support of the Canadian Can- cér Society to sponsor his marathon. He wrote, “I'm not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to.” On April 12, 1980 Fox dipped his_artificial leg into the Atlantic ocean and set out on a journey which, little did he know, would echo through the years. On Sept. 1, 1980, Fox stopped running after 143 days and 3,339 miles near Thunder Bay, Ontario after finding that cancer had spread to his lungs Despite chemotherapy and interferon, Fox died June 28, 1981 at Royal Columbian Hospi- tal in New Westminster, B.C. Since then communities throughout Canada and the province celebrated Fox and his mission while raising funds for cancer research, These people have helped keep Fox's dream alive In Castlegar there will be a Terry-Fox Event held at Pass Creek Park at | p.m., Sunday, Sept. 17 Organizer Verona Walker of the Castlegar C y Com- increase those number up a pledge form toda involved,” said Walker.
