Since then, visitors have been limited to sipping the murky water and visiting the luxurious Roman stone-baths, turned into a museum which ranks as the second-most popular British tourist attraction developers to renovate two 18th-century bath houses and an abandoned municipal pool and reopen them as “The idea is to revive swimming in the waters,” said John Rigg, director of Debenham, Tewson and Chinnocks, the firm of property consultants advising the couneil on redevelopment of the spas. TREAT AILMENTS For centuries, hydrotherapy or “taking the waters” has been practised to treat ailments ranging from rheumatism and arthritis to | circulatory problems, Some water is channelled from the source for drinking, usually to treat liver problems, Although Bath's three springs had been known particularly popular in the 18th century when aristocracy and royalty drank the warm water and listened to music in Bath's Pump Room, a fashionable .The two 18th-century bath houses to be renovated — the Old Royal Bath and the Cross Street Bath — were built on ancient Roman sites. A new borehole has been dug, ensuring that the water, warmed to 47C by the natural heat of the Earth's core, is now clean and free of any virus, BACK PROJECT The city couneil has put up the equivalent of about $2 million Cdn toward redevelopment. The centre-piece of the museum is the Great ' Bath, an atrium pool surrounded with colonnades and statues of Roman emperors. The Great Bath bath-house complex, heated rooms, saunas, a sort of whirlpool, Turkish baths, exercise rooms, hot cubicles, treatment rooms The Romans devised an efficient central heating system, with hot air heated by a charcoal-fuelled flue circulating between walls and underneath the floors. INVADED BRITAIN When the Romans invaded Britain in AD 43, they drained the marshes in the surrounding Avon valley and founded “Aquae Sulis” (Sun's Waters) where they built a temple dedicated to Sulis Minerva, their goddess of healing. In the second century AD, Bath became a thriving market centre, depending mainly on the production of woollen cloth. Then the baths began to attract royal and aristocratic families. The sudden rise of popularity in the town sparked large-scale construction, including the building of the Pump Room and other beautiful This architectural boom led to the discovery of the ancient Roman city under modern Bath. In the 18th century, the town became both a place of healing and a fashionable resort. But the popularity of spa bathing declined in the 19th century. Despite the name, these seeds sprout from the soil like any others. The difference is that artificial seeds can be used to grow thousands of genetically identical copies of an especially gorgeous geranium or a ACUPUNCTURE Pain relief found TORONTO (CP) — Acupuncture can ease the pain of many cancer patients, often reducing the amount of painkilling drugs they need, says a pain-control specialist from the University of Alberta. “When you have cancer, you have lots of pain,” Dr. Steven Aung told an international converence on acupunc- ture Friday. “And 35 per cent of all cancer patients die without adequate pain relief.” Aung,--who -trained_in oriental medicine in China before becoming a medical doctor and woving to Can- ada, has treated about 400 cancer patients in the Edmonton area. The ancient Chinese therapy involves inserting long, thin needles through the skin at specified points, then stimulating them éither manu- ally or electrically. Laser machines have been developed for acupuncture without needles. The effect of treatment is usually felt in a different part of the body than the site of insertion. Because pain from cancer is often experienced in more than one part of the|body and in different intensities, patients can need acupuncture in several areas, Aung said. But pain can be caused by a tumor pushing on a nearby structure in the body, by blocking blood vessels or by growing into nerve-rich spinal tissue. Tissue exposed to radiation can also “squeeze the nerves,” and surgical wounds often cause pain. Nausea and vomiting, a common side effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, can also be eased with acupuncture. Needles in- serted in the wrist area or on the outer calf just below the knee, for instance, can relieve nausea. Acup at the “Sh point” on the upper ear lobe can help ease tension and anxiety in the whole body.A needle is inserted into the skin, then taped over, and patients squeeze the point whenever they feel pain or tension. In most provinces, the therapy is not government-regulated, so the cost of seeing one of the estimated 3,000 acupuncturists in Canada is not covered by provincial health insur- ance plans, said a spokesman at the three-day conference, which ends Sunday. But Aung, a Buddhist, said in an interview he doesn’t charge cancer patients because he has “donated his life to people who are suffering.” “Some people have money; they treat with money,” he said. “I have knowledge; I treat with knowledge.” RUBBER STAMPS Made to Order CASTLEGAR NEWS 197 Columbia Ave. Phone 365-7266 aE SASS & Win (Ap — 24 HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE — AUTOMOBILE ¢ RESIDENTIAL ¢ COMMERCIAL COMPLETE LINE OF WOODEN & METAL WINDOWS SINGLE, DOUBLE & TRIPLE GLAZED SEALED UNITS, ALUMINUM PATIO DOORS & STORE FRONTS. -WE FEATURE: National Aluminum Products Lid NAP Growing through Quality and Service CASTLE GLASS & WINDSHIELD LTD. 2228 - 6th AVENUE, CASTLEGAR IF WE DON'T HAVE IT, WE'LL MAKE IT!
