Tee a Ra CASTLEGAR NEWS, October 26, 1980 A6_ ia. Reflections & Recollections, Martin Allis, 20, of Castlegar, was killed the evening of , Oct. 17 in a head-on automobile collision on the Waneta Road. At the memorial service last week, I gave the following address: Tam honored to have been asked to: speak to you today, at this memorial service for I know I speak for everyone here. I would give anything, as I know you would, to have been here on any occasion but this, Still what must be must be. The Roman poet Titus Maccous Plautus, who lived in the third century B.C. wrote: “He whom the gods love, dies young, while he is in health, has his senses, and his judgement sound.” We cannot be certain that Plautus was arguing for an early death to avoid tha ills and infirmities of old age or if he was altempling to comfort his friends who, too, had lost a son, 'EMAIR 1d kndw.f6p certain, however, that at least Martin was Health Minister ee family and his friends. This, in’ turn; helpéd mould him into the kind of special person that he became. _ Thad been acquainted with Martin for most of his 20 years, and was surprised how suddenly he changed from a very small boy to a fine, tall young man. During this time I knew him mainly: as an unfailingly politey warmhearted and obliging youth who was always on id when help was needed, who, even: though he was eitied with i shyness, . called to show Maria Lopez, our young student-guest from Mexico City, around the town; who to none. I cannot‘even venture A guess. My: scientific training has taught me only that, like Paul, I see as through.a glass, darkly, and know only that I don’t know. On the other: hand, it has taught me that nothing in this world is wasted ot. in vain, My faith tells me that, as Soloman wrote in the Book, of Ecclesiastes, “To! everything there is a season, ang’ a tins for every purpose, under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is: planted.” While. ghlsin ae way consoles me, nF 3 you, for the loss of a son, a friend, it does help’me to accept it.-It also remin "Sohn Donne's famous’ Meditation: ~ “*"“No mani is ait’ island entire of itself," - every man-is part of the continent, a part of the main, . if-a olé red away byt the sea, Euro) is | less; as weil as tf'a promentory were, as wellvas if‘a manor of thy friend or thine’ own were any man’s death diminishes me because I.am:: involved in mankind, and therefore’ never send to know for whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.” By his early death, Martin has recalled to us not only the fact of our.own mortality, but of our own involvement in all mankind. He has, as well, left us with the unforgettable memory of a kind, generous and warmhearted young man whom we all loved, and who will, though we grow old, remain eternally young, untouched and unmarred by the passing of the years. And so.we shall remember him a bright candle in the ‘encompassing: dark. Martin's death is the latest in a series of violent deaths | among young people recently in this area. This time the anguish associated with such tragedies’ has been brought to me with vivid sharpness. In his book ‘Death Be Not Proud’, the novelist John Gunther writes a memorial to his son by quoting from another. poem by John Donne. For the Allis family, and for all of those who have lost a son or daughter recently, I would like to -Yededicate that same poem: - “Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so: For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow * Die not, poor Death; not yet canst thou kill me. From Rest and Sleep, which but thy picture be, Much pleasure, then from thee much more must flow; And soonest our best men with thee do go — Rest of their bones and souls’ delivery! Thoi'rt slave to fate, hence, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell; And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well’ And better than thy stroke.
