federal budget cuts could be
nearly fatal for the arts com-
munity, says a group of
prominent Canadian authors
and artists.

The group, which includes
authors Pierre Berton and
Farley Mowat, told a news
conference Tuesday: “At a
time when we've all but lost
our cultural sovereignty be-
cause of the massive incur-
sion of American television,
the government's recent bud-
get cuts are a near fatal blow
to our cultural survival.”

The artists have formed a
group to lobby against the
Conservatives’ cultural re-
straint measures and their
plans to cut $75 million from
the CBC's 1985-86 budget.
