Transitional training permits handicapped individuals to function more independently in modern society by introducing concepts vital to the performance of daily functions, Transitional Training teaches concepts of commerce, time, communications and hygiene as well as more academic pursuits, In addition to the standard academic levels of training, ABE offers English as a Second Language, teaching oral fluency to those whose native language is‘not English. Career Programs Career programs offered by Selkirk College are designed to prepare students for careers in busin industry and government, Career programs give students comprehensive training in a specific field of study. Some of the courses in a diploma program may also be applicable to a degree program. One- and two-year certificate programs and two- and three-year diploma programs are available at the Castlegar Campus and students may choose from Aviation, Business Administration, Electronics, Forestry, Nursing, Wildland Recreation and Computer Information Systems Technology. Selkirk College certificate programs include Early Childhood Education, Social Service Worker, Long Term Care Aide/Home Support Worker, Practical Nursing and Graphic Communications(Electronic Publishing and Applied Writing Photography and Graphic Design). The two-year Business Administration program, offered in a Co-operative Education format beginning in September 1988, trains men and women for employment in a) wide range of managerial positions in business, industry and the public sector. Students may now elect to pursue one of two majors offered; accounting and finance or marketing and general management. Selkirk College's two-year Electronics program is also offered as a co-operative education program and is designed to provide students with the broadest possible background in one of today's most diversified and rapidly changing careers. Students enrolled in the Nursing Program at Selkirk College are provided with a combination of academic and technical courses as well as practical experience. Students acquire the manual, technical and interpersonal skills required to carry out health care activities, Clinical experience in local hospitals and health care agencies and two mandatory work terms complete the training. The Computer Information Systems Technology program at Selkirk College is the third of the college's diploma programs offered in a co-operative education format. This means that now student combine classroom instruction with periods of paid work experience as they prepare for computer applications positions in business, industry and the public service. The program teaches students the technical aspects of computer systems that include micro, mini and mainframe systems. The Early Childhood "Education program prepares students to work with preschool children in day-care centres, nursery schools and playgroups. The program provides students with the training necessary to work in a day-care centre as an assistant supervisor, a first-step in completing requirements to obtain certification with the Provincial Child Care Licensing Board, ollege ‘Academic: UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS “Arts and Sciences” Anthropology Biology Hairdressing Office Administration Protessional Driver Trainin Ski Area Management and as a pre-school supervisor, Both theory and hands-on experience are included. The Social Service Worker certificate program focuses training on the development of skills, knowledge and atti- tudes essential to social service work. The program emphasizes communication skills, inter vention skills, an orientation to community resources, special needs and intensive study of social work values, principles and practices. Students receive practical exper- ience during the program. The Graphic Communications Program is comprised of four one-year certificate offerings in Electronic Publishing, Graphic Design, Photography and Applied Writing. The program teaches students traditional problem- solving techniques in the graphic communication field, as well as knowledge of existing production techniques and state-of-the-art technology as it is used to transfer these ideas into finished products. Students will gain an under- standing for the organization and dissemination of information, and will develop writing and research skills as they relate to the communications industry. Pre-Employment Pre-employment programs at Selkirk College are available in the areas of health services, business and trades training. Pre-employment programs Prepare students for entry level positions in the labor market, give them the necessary skills to continue studies in technology programs or enter apprenticeship programs. Most pre-employment programs are available at the Nelson Campus, however, some are offered in other communities within the Selkirk College region. Pre-employment programs include Office Administra- tion, Hairdressing, Practical Nursing, Welding, Ski Resort The “Pre-Protessional and Protessional Programs” Engineering Commerce Aviation Forest Nursing Operation and Management, and Fine Woodwork and Car- pentry. The Office Administration Program offers a variety of options which will prepare the student for the office of today ~~ and tomorrow, As students acquire the necessary basic office skills, these skills are applied to office-related tasks. New office technology is incorporated into the training modules by introducing the students to electronic office equipment, computers, and word processors. The variety of options available allows each student to choose the type of training best suited to his/her abilities and career goal. The Office Administration program is also offered at the Trail Campus. The primary objective of the eleven month Hairdress- ing program is to develop skills in hairstyling techniques and to acquire knowledge of related areas which will enable male or female graduates to perform the work of an operator. Employment opportunities exist as hairstylist, beauty technicians, platform artists and in salon mana; ment, Classes are small, with students acquiring a good idea of practical experience in the context of the college's own hairdressing salon, Upgrading courses are available period- ically to licenced practising hairdressers. A seven-month Welding program that is divided into approximately 35 per cent theory and 65 per cent practical experience is also offered at the Rosemont Campus. By successfully completing the “C” level training, a welder has an excellent base to function as a safe and competent entry-level tradesman. The “B” and “A” levels advanced a welder’s skills to meet all the trades challenges overseen by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and Canadian Standards Association Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes.
