Star- tled, Mel turned around to see arms flailing under the tarp. “Me? You're the old Koot so get off ME!"’ hollered a second voice. Suddenly the tarp flew off and there were two grown men wrestling-on the cabin floor. As they rolled on the floor towards the fire, Young Mel screamed. Both men stopped, looked at each other and then looked around the cabin and spotted Mel. Young Mel spoke first. “You must be Kootenay and Columbia Rivers,"’ she said. “Connie, what are you doing * here?’’ they growled. “I’m Mel,” she said. ‘*My gran- dmother was Connie. My gran- dfather used to tell me stories about youtwo.”’ Judging by the look of disbelief on their faces, Young Mel realized that the Rivers brothers had been buried for 100 years and wouldn't know about Connie and her gran- dfather “If you two can stop arguing long enough I will tell you the canoes. Each week, Young Mel returned to the cabin with provisions for the brothers and answered any questions they had about the area. The brothers kept busy reading about the area, studying new maps that didn’t make much sense. But, try as they might, they couldn't remember where they had buried the gold. Nothing was the same. The landmakrs had all changed Late in April, Young Mel brought a copy of her family album to show to Kootenay and Colum- bia. There were. some unusual drawings and cryptic notes in the album that her grandmother Con- nie had made. “Of course,"’ hollered Colum- bia, ‘‘she knew where we were going to meet that night and she has written clues that would only make sense to her, or to someone who knew the story.’” Kootenay cried, **Yes! All we have to do is solve the clues and that will tell us where we hid the gold." Excited, the brothers became completely absorbed in the album and the clues and didn’t notice that Young Mel had left. Kootenay, are looking for the new regional Red Cross off!
