probe marketed by a suburban Van-
couver company may spell an end to
frivolous paternity suits.

“Mary Jones thinks Joe Bloggs is
the father,’ says Terry Owen,
president of Helix Biotech. ‘Joe
Bloggs thinks he may not be the
father. Can we find out for sure?

“The answer is yes, we can. With
exquisite accuracy."’

Since May, Helix has worked on
seven such cases in British Columbia,
has eight others in progress and has
received inquiries for a dozen more,
Owen said in a recent interview,

The genetic probe technology, also
known as DNA fingerprinting, is
licensed from a division of New York-
based Quantum Chemicals Corp.

It can establish paternity with 99.98
per cent accuracy, far better than the
87 per cent for the tissue typing
method, said Owen, who founded

Helix in 1980 after receiving his PhD

in zoology from the University of
British Columbia.

It also reduces the potential waiting
period.

The larger size of the blood sample
needed for tissue typing means an in-

fant must-be six to 12 months old,
Owen said, but there is no age limit
for the smaller blood sample used in
gene probes.

“*With people who are involved in a
paternity case, they want to know
now.”

Deoxyribonucleic (DNA) molecules
form the basis of heredity. A child
inherits half his DNA pattern from
his mother and half from his father,
making paternity tracing
unequivocal, Owen said.

At its labs in the Vancouver suburb
of Richmond, Helix extracts the DNA
from the blood or tissue sample. Af-
ter a series of treatments the firm ob-
tains DNA pictures consisting of a
series of bands that can then be mat-
ched.

«Although paiernity squabbles will
form the gene probe’s main market,
Owen said the technology ean also be
used in impaired driving cases or to
identify participants in a crime.

A further application is wildlife
forensics. Helix is currently working
on a project -with Simon Fraser
University to genetically match sam-
ples from the carcasses of black and
grizzly bears with organic material
taken from suspected poachers.
