CALL IT COSMIC PINBALL 4 class's celebration of the qualities of Jupiter. “Women do Math’ at workshop A workshop geared toward en- couraging young women to pursue studies in sciencé and math is scheduled for May 16 at Selkirk College in Castlegar. Entitled Ms. Infinity; Women Do Math, the one-day workshop is aimed at young women in grades nine and 10, who are not necessarily the best mathematics students, but who may be in danger of dropping mathemetics because they do not see its‘ importance to their futures, a news release from the college said This conference is an offshoot of the highly successful conference of the same name held annually at Simon Fraser University since 1987. The day will consist of lectures, a career workshop and several hands- on math and science workshops. ‘Although women make up more than half the population, they are only a small minority of the professionals in math, the sciences and technologies. In Canada a serious shortage of scientifically and technically trained people is forecast in the next 10 years. One way to make up this shortfall is to encourage women to enter these fields. “The reasons for this under- representation are complex, but one strong factor is that young women lack the necessary role models and the encouragement to pursue the training required. For young women in rural areas and smaller towns, these disadvantages are compounded by the fact that they will probably never have met a scientist, male or. female, and will know few professionals other than teachers and doctors. This conference attempts to fill this gap,’* the release said. Participants will attend three workshops on varying topics from among the six sessions available. Guest speakers and workshop lead- ers include Dr. Penny LeCouteur, of Capilano College’s chemistry depar- tment, who will present a workshop on graphing and radioactive decay. Dr. Maria Issa, of UBC's depar- tment of laboratory medicine, will lead a workshop on modelling cells designed to show how measurements are used to tell about the function of cells. Susan Hamm of Douglas -College will lead a workshop called games mathematicians play, during which participants will discover how games can lead to mathematical truths as well as mathematical mysteries, the release said. Selkirk College instructors Suzan- ne Sampson and lanthe Warner together with April Anderson, coor- dinator of the forestry extension Program, will each lead workshops which encourage hands-on par- ticipation by students. Appearing as role models are Suzanne Carter, x- ray and ultrasound technician at the Castlegar hospital, pharmacist Barb- ara Rainville, bio-chemist/nutritionist Laura Williams, engineer Lou Ann McCurdy and Castlegar ici hs Dancers delight seniors social At the Senior Citizens’ social meeting April 18, between 60 and 70 seniors enjoyed a potluck dinner convened by Sarah Jacobson. A large variety of dishes ‘were available to choose from, and the tables were tastefully decorated with spring flowers. The dinner was followed by a Program put on by the Debbie Tom- pkins Dancers. About. 25 dancers ranging in age from four to 12 per- formed: 12 dances, with beautiful kilts and costumes appropriate for each dance, They performed tap dances, highland and sword dances and folk dances. The younger dancers were cap- tivating in their clown costumes as they danced the clown dance, and their doggies costumes as they dan- ced to the Doggie with the Long, Long Tail. A special number not seen before was the Polynesian pole dance, where they danced in their bare feet, Jodi and Ashley Tompkins also entertained by playing some of their fiddle pieces which were greatly ap- preciated. All the dancers received en- thusiastic applause at the end of their program, and were served with juice and cookies by the seniors. The next social meeting will be May 16 and all seniors are invited to Twin Rivers School at 12 noon for a band concert. This has become an annual event and it is a special treat to hear the school choir and band. After the concert refreshments will be served at the seniors centre for association members.
