Have you ever had that sink ing feeling that you're just “not good enough that no matter how hard the attempt you never will be? Take yesterday afternoon, for example, while my partner “sweated” his-own stresses on a { business trip out of town, left to “manage” the domestic front The scene opens in our living room where | am “glued” to my six week old son (better known as nursing). The seven and five year old are involved in a full scale war. (They KNOW I cannot come to intervene). The meat pies “should” have come out of the oven ten minutes past and the dog is not only barking, but wrapped around a birch tree in the back yard. The telephone is ringing, the doorbell chimes and I have only HALF of my hair curled. This is NOT an exaggeration. You can bet I did not feel “good enough” to deal with the situation and fur- ther was indulging in murderous ?" And worse yet, * I was | fantasies involving by abserit life partner.-I mean really, did I CHOOSE to be in this situation? Well, as a matter of fact, yes I did, my life partner reminds me. Barring physical limita- tions that we are born with, there is no situation in our lives that is not a result of our cho: how- ever indirect they may be. It is interesting to note that in my case, these choices invariably-put me in positions where I feel “not good enough”. Could this be a death wish? What's the payoff? There's food for thought. We make choices every day in our hives always with a payoff in mind. Even if it is the lesser of two evils. So let's explore some of these payoffs. For those of us trying to shed a few or thirty unwanted pounds, what could the payoff possible be for totally “blowing” our diets? Surely no one would choose constant feel- ings of guilt, failure and inade quacy that comes with falling off the wagon Not too many moons ago I was queried as to how comfort- able I was with my physical image. I waved my hand back and forth in front of the poor soul's face, for surely he was blind. The challenge here, said he, was to discover the choosing my image. Ge know, perhaps I'm one of these ‘odd” people who love torture Or possibly I harbored a secret desire to qualify for those “before and after” advertisements. Some people will do anything for a few extra bucks. None of this really rang true and I therefore went: on an “inner” quest to discover the pay- offs. To my surprise I discovered that [ was actually comfortable in my present state, emotionally that is. What would happen if I were to lose all those pounds, achieve “ * weight? I was enlight ize that I may run the TILL, even then, not feeling “good enough”. Gosh, that's indeed a scary thought and it's much safer to be overweight and lacking willpower, also pro- viding an excuse to feel inade- quate Aside from this revelation, I was not pressured to maintain a “trim slim" image because after all, I didn't really trust myself. So as obscure as they may be, the payoffs exist and once out in the forefront of my consciousness, are easier to deal with. I am happy to report that since that time I have made better choices and changed my image to a somewhat slimmer me. Until recently of course, when in a moment of pure madness, I decided to get pregnant and have a baby. Now, I am back to square one but with more enthusiasm and armed with knowledge. That's not to say that I will totally give up my tendencies toward self- sabotage. I need to feel sorry for myself once in awhile. What the heck, no one else will! It’s almost time to store away those coats, hats, scarves and all those cumbersome winter attire and scope out everything to see what's still in fashion, what still fits and what needs to go to the Salvation Army. By the time you've finished you have half of the wardrobe you had last spring and summer. What to do? What's-next? Well here are few fashion trends that will blow you away this sum- mer. Western is back in full force. Cowboy hats are back, but they're not as big and bulky as they were in the early 80's Denim shirts and skirts never really went out of style, but this season they're beaded in native designs of totem poles, fish, eagles, and Arctic scenery is becoming more popular than ever. Before our marriage, we made all the right decisions -- we finished school, I didn't get pregnant and we had a good time. I went to a small college on a scholarship and worked two jobs to pay my bills. Steve felt it necessary to attend a more prestigious univer- sity. He received a few hundred dollars in grants, took out a large student loan and worked part-time. He moved into a fraternity house, which cost another few thousand dollars. After college, he went to law school. We had an elaborate wedding and a beautiful honeymoon in the Orient. No expense was spared. I felt that after all the years of sacri- ficing, we deserved to begin our life together in style One year later, 1 found out that Steve and his parents had financed the greater part of his education through credit cards and the debt was astronomical. He said it never occurred to him to tell me about it and admitted he didn't know exact- ly how much it was. He thought he could handle it That was three years ago, but I Still feel resentment. I have tried all my life to make practical decisions and assumed I'd met a man who did. the same. Steve is the kindest person I've ever known, and he loves me dearly, but I'm having a hard time forgiving him. I hate owing money, and it will be years before we can pay off this enor- mous debt I feel overwhelmed and have no enthusiasm for the future. Please give me some advice that will help me get over this. -- No Name, No City Dear N.N.: Granted, Steve should have told you about the debt before you married him, but he didn't. So, are you going to hang on to the anger and let it ruin your life together? I hope not Thousands of other couples who are saddled with heavy debt from financing a college education pay it off eventually and so will you Stop picking at this wound or it will never heal. Think positively about your future together so you can be a helpmate instead of a mill- stone. Dear Ann Landers: There is an older man I'm very attracted to who works at the school I'm attending. He wears a gold band on his len ring finger, so it's safe to assume that he is married. Every time I see him, my insides tum to jelly. He has a very nice, outgoing personality, and whenever I run into him in the corridor, he is polite and friendly. I would just love to Strike up a conversation, but the only thing I've been able to say so far is "hi." Tvé-tried my best to stop think- ing about this person, but I can't. He is on my mind constantly Would it be a good idea to be per- fectly honest and tell him how I feel? T've never been so hung up on any man in my entire life. Please help me out on this, Ann. I am -- Totally Confused in Fort Worth, Texas Dear Fort Worth: That gold band should serve as-a red flag, a neon sign and a 1 O-foot billboard that says: "I AM UNAVAIL- ABLE.” My advice is to start looking around school for someone in your age bracket who is a legitimate candidate for romance.
