Phone 6, Montana stables, for a gurney. important measures taken during the past year in connection with forest reservations was the action of congress. in withdrawing from the Mount Rainier forest reserve a portion of the region i superintendence, ‘plant, and, ‘advance development work. of prod aton of ore and. of putting it on the cars reached about $7. That figure, it must. be under- stood, included not only the cost of stoping and sorting, bnt all the other mine charges, such as power,. depreciation of ‘ost important of. all, It wsa in fact the figure obtained by divid- ing the total expenses ofa first-class shipping -mine by the number of tons'of ore produced. There cao be.no argument .that such. is the correct way: of estimating -the -cos! of outputting. While ore can,-be. stoped and delivered for a fraction of that figure yet sooner or later de- reopen the mine and the dead work must then be accounted for. fe That charge of $7 per ton has, however been steadily cut down-un- til now in some of the largest mines it is nearer $3 than the former fig- ure. . Today the superintendent. of a Red Mountain shipper was dis- cussing the situation. _ ‘‘I believe,” said he, “that before many months more our property will be extracting its ore and carrying on development- at a cost not greater than $2.50 perton. The low treatment rates enable us to stope for the full width of the ledge from wall to val, and no_ sorting i We can knock down ore right along with a battery of three or four ma- chines, and every ounce of it is sent to the smelter. That of course ac- © counts for a substantial cut off the the old expenses when oily narrow seams of ore were mined, and even then all the gangue was hand- sorted. ° “Simultaneously. with increased tonnage on that account have come decreased costs of superintendence and general expenses, while more and still more men are employed at greater economy each. Improved machinery is steadily being intro- duced and electricity is entering steadily into the many processes -that go to convert a virgin ledge into virgin gold and copper. As I said before, I believe that in a short time we shall be outputting at an average cost not greater than $2.50 per ton.” With a cost of $2.50 for mining and a $6 smelter rate, it is evident the $8.50 ore can be handled with- out loss, while $9 rock will pay a profit of 50c per ton. —_—_—_—_—_—_—_———__ BANDMASTER TRESHAM 10 LEAD Baton Waver ol the Dufforin Bifles to .
