Some of the defects could end: lives, he says, Waste not, want not .. . is _ the ketchup bottle asymbol? By ALEX MAIR (A column in the Edmonton Journal.) Many people are com- pletely consistent in their approach to life until they come to the end of a ketchup bottle. You can tell a great deal about people by studying their attitude towards the end of a ketchup bottle, and the same thing applies to a bottle of Worcestershire sauce as well. i There are people who seem to enjoy the good life. Two cars in the garage, winter holidays to fun-in-the- sun places, cut glass de- canters for the port and sherry sitting ona silver tray on the side board, and other little things ‘like that. You'll notice that these people are so comfortable that they don’t even save paper clips. But watch them at the kitchen table when they're getting down to the bottom of the ketchur bottle. Gloomy Yultides Until 1681, a Massachu- setts law prohibited celebra- ting Christmas “by feas- ting, or any other way.” Like thousands of dour- faced reformers, gloomy New Englanders had: ig- nored the holiday. They feared that Christmas was the work of the devil, and if not, certainly the frivolous. As the patron saint of Sat- urnalia, Santa Claus was rejected as barbarous by the good, but over-religious folk of New England. Eventually, the Dickens concept of the holiday was accepted, There is a fresh bottle in the refrigerator, and they know it, but they will pass the old bottle from one to the other, turning it upside down and belting it with the heel of their hand, trying desper- ately to get at the last two grams before they open the new bottle.” People who are com- pletely normal in every other respect will sit at the lunch table, calmly enjoying their meal while a ketchup bottle is balanced upside down in the middle of the table. They're waiting for the ketchup to run down to the neck so they can hammer a little more out of their cold cuts. There is some sort of sin attached to throwing away a ketchup bottle with a bit left in the bottom. And deep down inside, everyone knows that you never get all the ketchup out of a bottle. We are very fond of a product called HP Fruity Sauce. It comes in a square bottle the same as regular HP sauce, and is about the consistency of motor oil in January. You would be am- azed at the lengths to which we'll go to get the last faint trace of sauce out of. the bottle. We will leave the bottle in the refrigerator until just . before we need it. This turns the contents into a molasses- like goo, We will prop the bottle upside down in the middle of the table, catching it from time to time when it tips over and smashes a cup and saucer. We will hold the opened bottle over a good dinner plate and pound the bottom of the bottle until the heel of our hand is black and blue. We will stick the bottle in a pot of hot water, hoping to thin the stuff so that it will do more than run down the side of the container and turn that portion of the glass a faint pink. We will take the bottle from the pot of hot water, ‘hold it dripping over our best table cloth, and try hitting it with our hands again. But will we go to the refrigerator and get the new bottle? Of course not. You don’t open the new bottle until the old one is all used up, and as anyone can see, there is still some left in the bottom of the old bottle. The sauce covers the bottom of the bottle to at least the depth of a dime. Edmonston demanded the federal transport depart- ment open an investigation, but transport official Gary Murray has said there is nothing in the association's material, supplied by an ex-Honda employee, that in- dicates Hondas are unsafe. He demanded that Hon- da make public all its war- ranty extensions and reim- burse owners who paid for repair or replacement of the parts involved.
