Nelson 65271 7,618,324 Red Mountain Tunnel. _ If the bill of the Red Mountain Tunnel company now pending before the pro- vincial legislature passes that body an undertaking of great promise will be started at Rossland. Those promoting fhe tunnel proposi- tion include Messrs. C, R. Hosmer and H. Holt of Montreal. They want to tunnel Red mountain from a point on the Columbia river, between Trail and Murphy creek, tos point at or near the California mineral claim. The construction of such g tunnel will be of incalculable benefit and advan- tage tothe mines now being opened and developed situated on Red mountain, as it will afford a means of draining the underground workings of the mines, also giving a source of air supply to the moines and providing a convenient and inexpensive way of conveying ore from the lower workings of the mines to points of shipment. 80 he told me, Said Mr. Martin: “Iaaid to him jf you will give us the hauling of the matte which is the outcome of the ores we haul, to your smelter, we will give you the same rate from Ymir and other peinta on the Salmon river to Nelson as we give from those same points to North- port, which rate is $1 per ton. “I further agreed to make Nelson the rate of $2 per ton on ores from Rossland to Nelson, with the same understanding as to hauling the matte in return, It was atrictly a buainess. proposition and Mr. Croasdaile said those figures were quite satisfactory to him and were'nota | discrimination againat Nelson. When I made this statement to the Nelson board. of trade it also agreed with me. “There has never been any desire on my part to in any way discrimimate be- tween the two points. In fact I offered Mr. Croasdaile the $1 rate with the abova previsions over a year ago and be- fore the smelter at Northport was spo- ken of. “The rate on oreat present from Rosse land to Northport is 75 cents per ton, provided 3000 tons per month are far- nished. At 75 cents per ton we get 4.4 cents per ton per mile, and at $2 per ton on the Nelson haul we get 2.3 cents per Middle Weight Fight. -WOhicago, March 27.—L. M.
