United Way sees more donations It seems lots of people are campaigning these days and with the massive effort going on to the east of us, the United Way can INANCING OVER % INVOICE OWN ALL 98's & OB'S easily get lost in the shuffle. Our campaign is not about votes, but it is about support and, unlike the Quebec referendum, it is some- IN TRAIL thing about which we as Western- ers can do something concrete. It is, in fact, about the people of Castlegar and particularly about the one in three of us who use the services of a United Way agency each year. October was United Way Month in Canada. Our main cam- paign started in late September and is still actively in progress. Kickoff Day went well, thanks to all your support. Thanks also to all of you who came out to join from that day were up about 15 per cent from last year. The residential canvass is also showing an improvement over last yéar. Thanks to your generos- ity when our volunteers came to your door, the donations have increased about 20 pes cent over 1994 : To keep things in perspective, we should remember last year was not a great year. So while we are very grateful for the improve- ment seen this year, it has brought us back to where -we were two years ago. We still have a ways to go in order to meet our goal of $50,000. Our volunteer canvassers have finished their rounds. Unfortu- nately we did not have enough volunteers to visit every house in the area, so if you haven’t seen — — ie '88 Crown Victoria |'90 Topaz 4 Door ’ Toe ORO 4 * LES | Parte Sa + Cm , = a - ‘91 Tempo 4 Door |'86 Aerostar XLT | '90 Dodge Ram | '83 Bronco 4x4 «5 ce F + va a) =] a 9 al Olds Delta 88 oD 2 Olds Culass [oe butek Rese "86 F150 4x4 1 1 Aerostar AWD = aS 2795 Highway Drive « Trail, B.C. To those who have helped us toward our goal we say thank you. To those who have not yet helped, but are thinking of doing so, we say please do! We need you. I have one that I hope you will enjoy and share with your readers. Perhaps it will serve as an inspiration to others. Last year, Wausau, Wis., was the subject of a nega- tive story on “60 Minutes.” To combat this negative image, our newspaper, The Wausau Daily Herald; talked area businesses into co-sponsoring a “Random Acts of Kindness Week” this past March. Businesses, organiza- tions and individuals were encouraged to perform simple acts of random kindness for people they knew or didn’t know-The response was astronomi- cal. Over 200 businesses and organizations partici- pated. The employees of the newspaper went out in groups, wearing “Random Acts of Kindness” T- shirts, and performed good deeds. Banks washed car win- dows in the drive-up lanes. Church groups mowed lawns for people in the neighborhood. Movie theaters gave out free passes to people waiting in line. One indi- vidual walked into a restaurant and bought a cup of coffee for every person in the place. The newspaper ran a hot line for people to phone in the acts of kindness they had witnessed. More than 500 calls were received. The response was so tremendous that the Daily Herald has decided to do this again next year. This is an excellent example of how one orga- nization in town turned some negative reporting around instead of just griping about it. Thought you’d like to know. — Tim in Wausau Dear Tim: Four cheers for The Wausau Daily Herald! It has-tong been one of my favorite papers. Way to go!!
