Legion donates to many good causes during past year Installation of the branch and auxiliary officers took place in the Legion Hall last Saturday evening with all the pomp and circum- stance the occasion dictates. For the first time ever, the Royal Canadian Branch 170 will be served by a lady Chaplain. Rev- erend Dorothy Barker of St. David’s Anglican Church accept- ed the invitation from the Branch, taking over the duties from her predecessor at St. David's, the Reverend Charles Balfour, who has been transferred out of the area, Prior to the ceremonies, Presi- dent Rust gave the 1990 Presi- dent’s Report stating that the financial position of the branch continues to be precarious with expenses continually increasing and very little improvment in rev- enues. Bingo is the major source of that revenue said Rust and he congratulated Bingo Chairman Denny Tucker and his committee for a job well done as bingo rev- enues have “increased dramatical- ly and continue to be our major source of revenue for the numer- ous charities we support.” Over the past year, the Legion has made some $20,000 in dona- tions, consisting of continued sup- port for the Kinnaird Scouts, Air Cadets, Children’s Hospital, Vari- ety Club, Canadian National Insti- SHUTTLE SERVICE 11989 GMC S - 15 4.3 litre "$$391 114988 GMC 1/2 ton pickup 1989 GMC 1/2 ton pickup 1988 GMC S - 15 pickup 1987 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 PU 1987 Chevy S - 10 pickup 1987 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup} 1986 GMC 3/4 ton pickup 1986 Ford Fi50 pickup 1986 Mazda B2000 pickup 11986 Ford Ranger pickup 1986 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup ___ |4986 GMC Stepside pickup "$19,691 "$25,991 [BRAND 626 LX Touring 4.6, 791 *19,691 5ei 1985 Ford F150 Extra Cab 1984 GMC Jimmy 4x4 1984 Dodge 4x4 pickup /1983 Ford F150 4x4 pickup| 1982 Datsun King Cab 4x4 1982 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 PU 1980 Toyota Short Box 4x4 1978 Ford 1/2 ton 4x4 PU 4977 Ford ribo pickup tute for the Blind, War Amputces (Champs), Cancer Society, Easter Seals and the Heart Fund. The branch also co-funded the furnish- ing of a room at the Vancouver Cancer Lodge with the West Kootenay Zone. Rust noted that maintaining a strong membership continues to be a major problem as the strength of the Legion is in its membership. Treasurer Hugh Wilson explained that anyone is eligible to join the Legion. “There are three types of mem- bers,” said Wilson. “A regular member is someone who has had military service, either past or pre- sent, An associate member is the son or daughter of a regular mem- ber. A fraternal member is a bar member that has full privileges and can serve on our committees but cannot chair a committee or bold an office. To become a frater- nal member, a person must be sponsored by a regular member and make application to the ranch.” Wah comes home to read new work Fred Wah, a long-time Koote- may resident, will return this month for a reading at the Koote- nay School of Writing Jan. 18 and at the Langham Jan. 19 in Kaslo. Wah, whose parents ran the old Diamond Grill Cafe in Nelson, and who worked there himself waiting tables, will read from his pew work, much of which deals with his life in Nelson as a boy and teenager. His new book, (his first novel), he describes as “a biotext, a cross between verse and novel, a life story.” Wah now is associate professor of Creative Writing and English at the university of Calgary. He received his B.C. at UBC and his M.A. at Buffalo. Many Kootenay residents will remember Fred Wah as the mov- ing force behind the School of Writing at the David Thompson University Centre. When the Social Credit government closed the school in 1984, Wah moved to Selkirk College in Castlegar where he taught writing in the Graphic Communications Dept. At the’ same time, be founded the Koote- nay School of Writing, with the suppor of DTUC faculty and stu- we well as the readings, Wah - will conduct a prose workshop Saturday, Jan. 19 from 10-2 at the S.U.B- in Nelson, Pre-registration . is required by phoning 352-2260.
