It was her last chance to win a high-school basketball title for her father. “Losing was really upsetting. We could have done better,” said Laurel, who plans to play college ball next year. “At the time I was really upset but we played really good in the game after Windsor.” The girls won that game 62-45 over O'Grady before losing to Duchess Park in a game that really didn’t mean much. Closkey’s other daughter, Wendy, will be back next year but she was also sad about los- ing. “This was the team that we thought would do really g = she said. “After the game talked a lot about the loss.” * There will be some people who talk about the loss of 1992 for a long time. Sentinel School was a resounding success. Organizers and participants all agree that the round-robin format made for an exciting day. The “Bird Killers” managed st squeak by the “Psycho Slam- mers” after two complete rounds of play, and walked away with the honours of the event. Entrants were divided into two teams and paired up by skill level within each team. Total scores were used to tabulate the victors. Afterwards a draw was held for prizes donated by area busi- nesses and all the participants received at least one. The “Most Sportsmanlike Player” award went to Marie Osis. The Slocan Valley Recreation Commission and the event orga- nizers would like to thank all the businesses who supported the event through their donations. Thanks also to the volunteers who made this event possible. They are: Dave Abrosimoff, Bill Perepolkin, Ken Sherbinin and Bob Podevilnikoff. I make no apologies for this time in my life — the tips were fair, and most importantly, I was able to ski every day. There was a bouncer there, a humble fly- weight with the disposition of a saint, who would come to'the bar and talk to me about harmony and discipline while he sipped his Pepsi and watched the door. I was always a bit concerned that his diminuitive size in this hurly-burly would one day see him hurt. I needn’t have worried. His quiet con- fidence and insistent smile were his most effective weapon , though his reputation for holding his own was undisputed. And while I never saw him involved in a brawl. he did tell me one thing that stuck in my mind. He said, he never had to worry much about an opponent unless his opponent knew how to stand on his feet. Then he would start to worry. Balance. Yin and Yang. Ketchup and Fries. Skiing and Smiling. Give this a try. After you have gone through your stretching and warm-up ritual at the top of the hill, pick a mellow, well- groomed slope for your first two runs of the day. Before you head down though, undo P y- This is a les- son in balance and a good way to start your day of skiing. With- out buckles tightened, your ski boots will lose their form, leaving you standing flat on your feet. The optimal skiing stance. Try a few runs like this playing your balance forward and back. Remember your hands and notice how they affect your balance. Feel how your turning ski reacts when you roll your ankle to the inside on your downhill ski. Try steering your tuming ski with your downhill foot while your boots are this loose and sloppy. This will all feel disquieting for a time, but very soon you will be standing square on your skis, rolling your ankle, and steering with your feet. Just like you should be when your boots are cinched. So don’t fight with your skis. Seek har- mony and balance. Just remember to do them up before you ride the lift.
