Health, seniors minister to visit Castlegar SHARLENE IMHOFF _ Sun Editor Minister for health and seniors, Elizabeth Cull will be visiting Castlegar today to attend meetings with the Seniors Advi- sory Council, a government- appointed council which Student charged in sexual assault A Selkirk College student has been charged with seven differ- ent counts, including sexual assault, . by Castlegar RCMP. - According to a media release from local RCMP, the youth, who can not be identified under the young offenders act, has been charged with: break and enter of a house; sexual assault with a weapon; unlawful confinement; theft under $1,000; threatening; unlawful use of a bank conve- nience card and; possession of stolen property. Police say the charges stem from the break-in of a residence on 6th Avenue in Castlegar, which occurred on Aug. 27. The 17-year-old Oriental male was arrested in Nelson on Sept. 2 and appeared in Castlegar Provincial Court on Sept.3. He was released from custody after a bail hearing and his next court appearance date is set for Sept. 16. - Now that’s English! and records the needs of senior citizens across the province. The Seniors Advisory Council will also be holding a public forum tomorrow which will allow Castlegar residents a chance to voice concerns about seniors issues. Cull will not be present dur- ing the public forum. Instead, she will be visiting and dis- cussing health issues with min- istry staff at the health unit. Her press secretary also said that Cull will not be meeting with local British Columbia Medical Assoctation ‘representatives while in Castlegar. ELIZABETH CULL - must come down—FAST!! What goes up .. .-— SUN STAFF PHOTO? Jason Keenan Open forum to address needs of senior citizens All residents invited to participate tomorrow SSHARLENE IMHOFF _ Adequate and affordable housing for senior citizens in Castlegar is an issue of concern. But what about other issues involving local seniors, such as elder abuse and prescription drug abuse by seniors? Or how about ethical issues, such as the right to die? Bill Stobo finds the corner pocket at the Side Pocket in downtown Castlegar. ‘SUN STAFF PHOTO / Shariene imhoft To address these issues and others, all Castlegar residents are invited to take part in a pub- lic forum, Sept. 10 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.. The Seniors Advisory Coun- cil, the government-appointed committee which is holding the meeting, was struck up two years ago to better represent the needs of seniors in government, and to work in partnership with seniors’ groups. The group holds about six meetings, each in a different community, to receive feedback from local seniors on issues which affect them person- ally. The Seniors Advisory Council also records the concerns and opinions of seniors, in order to form its own opinions and to make suggestions to govern- ment. The council recently released a position-paper on elder abuse, after months of research and dialogue. “It's something we had been studying for about a year and a half," said Seniors Advisory Council Chair Howard Petch, who adds that approximately 16,000 senior citizens in B.C. suffer from abuse. Of these cases, almost half involve abuse of the senior’s own finances. "We come across some very serious cases. The senior has been sick in the hospital, is released, and discovers that the “child” has sold their home," Petch said. More common cases of finan- cial abuse involve scam artists who prey upon ignorance, by telling seniors that their roof or siding needs repairing. “Usually the senior is asked to make some sort of financial deposit, after which nothing is tinued. Seniors abusing medication is another serious, and sometimes fatal problem. Due to age and Perhaps disabilities, some seniors can become socially iso- lated and therefore extremely depressed. Sleeping pills and other pre- scription drugs become used more and more by these seniors, who in some cases, will "pop" up to a dozen prescription pills each day. “Abuse of sleeping pills is common. This can result in memory lapses, or falls," Petch said. “Husbands and wives often share prescription drugs, honest- ly believing that what fixes his ailment will also fix hers." Petch said more education is needed if there is to be a signifi- cant reduction of problems such as elder abuse, financial abuse and even prescription drug abuse by seniors. Even medical doctors must be wary. “These seniors who abuse prescription drugs will go to several different physicians, therefore one doesn't know what the other has prescribed." Seniors must also be educat- ed, continued Petch. They must retain a sense of assertiveness which will help them to make decisions and keep them wary of any pitfalls. Petch, 67, was president of University of Victoria for 15 years before accepting the appointment to the Seniors Advisory Council. He says that now, more than ever, seniors’ needs and issues must be addressed. He only hopes that government is not slow to respond to the needs which are recognized.
