Dean and Lynda Carter of Castlegar have an attractive location surrounded by some ancient heritage There, along the shores of Slocan Lake, Valhalla Lodge and Tipi Retreat offers something of which there is a shortage these days; a serene peaceful area. What there is to offer to guests is very little noise other than the sound of the water hitting the rocks and the birds chirping and the occasional boat passing by, it all blends together like a well orchestrated symphony. The peaceful environment encourages guests to curl up with a book or hike into Valhalla Provincial Park for the day “This tranquil environrhent is enough of a change from most peo- ple's normal daily life to give people time to reflect,” Dean Carter said Time is one of the main things the Carters offer to their guests at the Tipi camp, time to do whatever their guests would like According to Dean Carter one of the reasons they decided to use this parcel of land as a tpi retreat was so they would have as little impact on the area as possible and the pi format fits in with the history of this neck of the woods This site was frequented by the Sinxts Indians and there are sull the remains of some of their Kukuli which are pit houses they used as winter homes. In their planning, both Lynda and Dean Carter, took into con. sideration the valuable history of their new location “Our goal is to blend in with the surrounding wildemess and give people a chance to enjoy a wildemess experience,” said Lynda Carter Both agreed the selection of the tipi, as the méans of accommo- dation, was a conscious choice to help maintain the atmosphere of the surroundings. “Being in the park, this is a real chance to main. tain that atmosphere," Dean Carter said. When they first purchased the land many hours of planning pre ceeded any on Site activity Our type of development this close to the park is the best of two worlds. We try to have as little impact as possible, we operate an Eco-tourism establishment.” So far they have have had out of area guests from Mexico, Van- couver, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
